Just got this email from Rapidshare:

Quote:
Dear Customer #*******,

we hereby inform you that paragraph IV.(2) of our Terms of Use will be technically implemented and activated on 20. October 2009.

Premium Accounts whose files use more than 25 GB (25.000.000.000 Bytes) of storage will be subject to the file inactivity regulations, which effectuate the automatic deletion of inactive files. A file is inactive if it has not been downloaded for at least 90 days.

For Premium Accounts that use less than 25 GB of storage, the storage time for inactive files is unlimited.

If you do not agree to the Terms of Use, you are entitled to cancel the contractual relationship within a time limit of four weeks as of receipt of this notification. Should you not make use of your right of cancellation, the alterations are presumed to be accepted and become an effective integral part of the contract.

Best regards,

I wonder how many of my files have not been downloaded for ninety days. Rolling Eyes
Anybody have a work around idea for this?

Looks like I may have to re-up some files now from time to time. On a side note, this is why I don't like my links quoted, in the event I have to re-up, I don't like those dead links stuck in posts that I can't edit... cause some members may try to download from quoted links and not even realize the links in the original post have been replaced.

I just renewed my RS premium account for another year. The next day I get this.

"we hereby inform you that paragraph IV.(2) of our Terms of Use will be
technically implemented and activated on 20. October 2009.

of the contract."

Ok but what does it mean "if I don't agree"?
Does that mean I can cancel my account - get no money back - lose any stored files?

Gee, what an option.

I got the same mail (like many others i suppose), terrible news.
And to your question: if you have paid for this account (not using points), maybe there's a chance to get your money back, talk to them. But i guess your files will be gone then, unless you move them maybe to a collectors acount.

This is a step back, guess RS is under pressure cause other hosters got too popular, therfor they have to reduce their costs. As i started uploading to RS this 90-day rules applied to premium account, then they removed it and now it comes back.
A bit too much changes for my taste in the last few months, just think of this RS-point-disaster (obviously they are not willing to pay anyone, never heard of one that got paid at least and i don't need a laser-mouse or a RS-T-Shirt)

Well, might not be affecting too much users, but i used my premium account also for storing stuff to get some diskspace, and then post it from time to time. Guess these days are gone ...

In days of this old 90-day rule i had a small excel-file where i copied the RS-account-data. With a bit of (very annoying) formatting, i could see in the end when which file was last downloaded. I hope these time were gone, but maybe we have to do it again.
Maybe some clever guys could use this new RS-api extensions to code some useful tools for this, but i never saw any 3rd party RS-tool out there and i'm not sure if i would trust it if i see one. Guess this will be a paradise for phishers Confused
Another method would be to go through your acount pages and download at least 5 MB of the files that have not been downloaded. Then (and only then) the timestamp changes. This is another new thing: in former times it was enough to access the file (by just clicking on it, and then cancel the download) to change the timestamp.

Such things drive me mad ... i guess it's time for the "Moment of Zen" now Wink

This new rule is really annoying since I use my RS account for both sharing and archiving. I have 1200 files online of which only half are shared. This is going to be a pain in the ass. How am I supposed to know which files are up for deletion?

Maybe it is time to look for another hosting service! Oh, what did I just read: nobody is getting paid for points earned? Is that really true? Anyone got more info on this? Oh, and no, I don't need that RS shirt or something! Rolling Eyes

What a crappy policy. If only 5MB needs to be downloaded then I suppose I might be able to find a way to batch file only 5MB of each file but what a pain in the ass.

RS is turning into a piece of shit file hoster. Anyone have a good idea on a 5MB per file script or a program that could do it?

Did a quick check about the 5MB needed to be downloaded to change the acces date.
To me it seem like you need to download more than that.
Next downside is that even if you brake off the download, your daily qouta is reduced with the full filesize.
Meaning that your daily 5GB replenishment, to a maximum of 25GB, could fairly quick be used for only file maintaining and not for downloading new stuff.

Another question: If that new rule is implemented at 20th of october, do we have 90 days from then (i don't think so) or will the files be deleted from 20th october on.

I just checked it and i only lost only about the 6 or 7 Mb i downloaded and the date has changed. But i guess we are not the only one that know that "trick" and if you are trying to access, let's say, 300 links one after another just to change the timestamp, maybe RS suspects an illegal point gathering attack (cause it's the same ip adress with which you logged in) and ban you (or whatever). But somebody has to try it Wink

The trick is simple, but time consuming: activate "detail view" in your RS-settings, mark the whole page, copy-and-paste it into excel (use insert content as / text). Then after deleting a few cells you have the link and the corresponding last-dl time in one row. Sort these two columns after time and you'll see which file was downloaded when. Files that have not been downloaded at all have no date. Annoying, i know, and it gets even worse if you have seven pages in your account (not for very long anymore, i'm afraid Wink )

If you just want to see the date, use the detail view. Those files without any download have no date, but if you switch to the new beta-premium zone and remain the detail view, you can see at least the upload-date (the upload date and the possibility to rename files are the only two reasons to use this new beta-zone, imho)

Maybe some popular download manager has the feature to interrupt the download after a given amount of data? Any ideas, FreeDownloadManager can't do this.

RS keeps cutting and scaling back member priviledges and it's beginning to really piss me off.
I've had an account for the better part of 3 years and the reductions have been significant.
Remember when there were NO restrictions or limitation on RS points earned?
I would like to hear what mega members have to say because if I lose any stored files, I will seriously consider moving over.
And I will be voicing that to them as this date approaches.
Nice way to treat loyal members...

I'm also thinking of moving. This service was supposed to be used for storage and now they are only allowing you 25GB. I may do the month to month plan until I figure out what I am going to do. If I have to I will download my entire 60GB or so of data just to keep it going for 90 days.

There has got to be an easier way to trick RS without having to do it manually.

Be careful of downloading them by yourself (as premium member), because rs may say, you'll betray in order to create rs points.
Violation of their TOS = account deletion.

This has really pissed me off...

I think I'll have to look into using premium points to create a second account, keeping my first account 'safe' at just under 25GB. Wonder if that's possible?

I go through my files about once a month and download anything that is coming up to 3 months since last download. It normally only takes me about half an hour. (I have about 3000 files). It's worth the trouble.

I have a sort of love/hate feeling for rapidshare. I often feel like their company motto is "We don't care because we don't have to." On the other hand I've never seen another host do any better. Maybe someday rs will frustrate enough of their customers enough times and enough customers will leave. Then they'll have to start caring about customer service or just turn off the servers and let a new dog have his day.

Good point. I'll keep that in mind whenever I reply to great posts from now on. Maybe just quote the preview pictures instead of the link.
