Hilton ordered to court for hearing

screenshot

Paris Hilton was ordered Tuesday to appear in court May 4 for allegedly violating her probation in a reckless driving case by driving on a suspended license.

City prosecutors are seeking to revoke her probation on grounds that she violated its terms, which could result in a sentence of up to 90 days in jail.

The hotel heiress and TV personality was not present for Tuesday's hearing, which was conducted almost entirely with lawyers at the bench speaking privately with the judge.

At one point, however, Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer was heard saying that the allegation was driving on a suspended license. He then commented to the lawyers, "I find that a violation."

The judge later announced that the matter would be postponed to May 4 and Hilton was ordered to appear.

Outside court, Hilton attorney Howard Weitzman was asked whether the matter was close to being resolved.

"It is," he said without elaboration.

Asked what will happen on May 4, he said, "I expect to be here."

The prosecutor did not comment to reporters.

In January, Hilton pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving stemming from a Sept. 7 arrest in Hollywood and was sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education and $1,500 ($A1,800) in fines.

She was then pulled over on Sunset Boulevard on February 28 for allegedly speeding with her car's headlights off and was ticketed for misdemeanour driving with a suspended license.

Hilton's spokesman Elliot Mintz said at the time that she was not aware her license was suspended

I honestly believe she must have planned pretty much everything. It's just to pat to be an accident; and it's not as if anything that's come out is actually damaging to her.

I'm pretty sure she's laughing all the way to the bank; so long as she stays in the news, she's going to get interview offers and what not, which makes money and perpetuates her fame.

Paris Hilton faces May court date over parole violation

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Celebrity socialite Paris Hilton was on Tuesday ordered to appear in court next month over a parole violation that could land her in prison.

After a behind-closed-doors legal conference with prosecution and defense lawyers in Los Angeles, superior court judge Michael Sauer said Hilton must attend in person for a hearing on May 4.

The blonde party-loving heiress, who is one of the world's most photographed women, landed in hot water after she was caught driving on a suspended licence following a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor reckless driving charge.

If convicted of violating parole, Hilton could be jailed for up to 90 days, according to Nick Velasquez of the City Attorney's Office.

Paris’ privates leaked
Apr 26 09:51am

Hot on the heels of Lindsay Lohan's My Space details being leaked comes news that bitter rival Shanna Moakler has unveiled Paris Hilton's BlackBerry listings.

The wife of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has been engaged in a year-long feud with the socialite after Barker hooked up with Paris, leading to the 'Meet the Barkers' reality stars split.

The couple have since reconciled but the animosity remains - currently a star on the American edition of 'Dancing With the Stars', Moakler published the hotel heiress' personal phone number and email address on her website in a blog entitled "Put This In Your Pipe and Smoke It".

Elliot Mintz, the publicist for Paris Hilton, hit back at Moakler, stating "This woman is simply desperate for press and attention."

But she didn't stop there, also revealing Lindsay Lohan's email address.

Shanna wrote on her MySpace page: "I posted this blog back in January to let you all know that my accounts were hacked and since there are two little girls with too much time on their hands and no one to love them I'd like to share my 'hacked' info as well.

"I've tried to disassociate myself from both these parties for some time now and like a fungus they won't go away."

Lindsay's people said that the contact details for the actress were incorrect, saying: "She and Shanna are not friends."

Well...obviously so - Shanna has since removed the blog, but added another: "There are numerous reasons why I posted my last blog and I stand behind every single one of them."

Please don't stop here ladies! Really use those nails!

Paris has political opinions. She believes she would make a very good president of the US.

Prince slams Paris
Apr 27 03:24pm

screenshot

Having slayed all and sundry with his powerhouse performance at the American football Superbowl, diminutive rocker Prince has turned his targets toward hotel heiress Paris Hilton.

He humiliated the party girl and her singing ability, or lack thereof, when she attended a recent Prince show.

The sister of the less demonstrative Nicky was in the audience as Prince performed at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas's Club 3121.

The Purple One invited the "Stars Are Blind" warbler to join him onstage, with a thrilled Hilton charging on the stage.

The "1999" superstar handed the wanna-be-pop star a microphone and mugged to the audience, "Let's see if she can really sing".

Humiliated, Paris left the stage - and two songs later, she walked out on the show.

Hilton's publicist is insisting that the story is false, while Prince's spokesperson had no comment to make.

Paris Hilton given 45 days in jail
5th May 2007, 11:13 WST

screenshot

A judge sentenced a shocked and tearful Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail, ruling that the hotel heiress violated her probation for a previous traffic offense by knowingly driving without a valid license.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer rejected Hilton's defense that she didn't realize her license was suspended and ordered the 26-year-old socialite to report to a county detention facility on June 5.

Hilton wept and her mother, Kathy, yelled at the prosecutor, "You're pathetic," as the packed courtroom cleared.

The stunning decision capped a two-hour hearing in which prosecutors argued that Hilton was thumbing her nose at the court and seeking to be placed above the law, while defense lawyers said she was being singled out for harsh treatment because of her celebrity.

Taking the witness stand in her own defense, the star of the reality TV show The Simple Life testified that she was unaware her driving privileges had been completely suspended at the time police stopped her and impounded her car on February 27.

Hilton said her publicist, Elliot Mintz, had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and that she relied on what he had said.

But the judge said he did not believe Hilton, pointing to a notice she had received from a police officer, and had signed, during another traffic stop in January.

He said Hilton had "completely ignored" that notice, which she had carried in her glove box for weeks, and another license suspension notice sent to her office address by the Department of Motor Vehicles that Hilton said she never saw.

"In my opinion, there's not doubt that she knew that her license had been suspended," the judge said. "She doesn't look at her mail, her personal assistant never goes through it either. ... I think she just wanted to disregard everything that was said and continued to drive no matter what."

In a final statement before she was sentenced, Hilton, dressed in a gray waist jacket, white blouse and black pants, her blond hair tied back in a pony tail, stood before the judge and denied that she had sought to flout the law.

"I did what I was told. I would never drive just because I want to. I follow the law and I respect the law. From now on I want to pay complete attention to everything," she said. "I just want to say I'm sorry."

But the judge was unmoved.

"Probation is revoked - 45 days in jail," he declared.

Hilton's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said he would appeal "to modify the sentence."

"It is clear that she has been selectively targeted for prosecution for who she is," he said outside the courthouse.

Hilton was sentenced in January to three years on probation and ordered into an alcohol-education program for pleading no contest - the equivalent of a guilty plea - to alcohol-related reckless driving after a September 2006 arrest.

In February, she was pulled over again for driving without headlights. Police impounded her car, a $190,000 blue Bentley, when they discovered she was driving on a suspended license.

Hilton recently finished taping episodes for a fifth season of The Simple Life, which returns to the airwaves later this month.

I'm pretty convinced that her going to jail has got to be the single best publicity move she could have made.

Figure: after she gets out, everyone will want to interview her, she'll be a center of attention for the media, and she can play it off that she's learned her lesson and is turning her life around, blah blah.

I calc it that if she wanted, she could have trivially hired a driver to take her anywhere, or taken a cab, or whatever else she wanted. The only reason to drive and get caught like this is for the very purpose of going to jail and garnering attention.

Not to mention, 45 days isn't much to someone who lives in luxury like her; it's not like she can lose her job or health insurance or have her wife/husband leave her, like sometimes happens to real people who go to jail.

Paris dubs jail-term 'cruel', fires publicist
May 08 08:56am

screenshot

Making her first public appearance since being sentenced to 45 days in gaol for violation of probation, celebutante Paris Hilton has dubbed the judge's ruling as cruel and unwarranted.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer ignored the 26-year-old hotel heriress's claims that she didn't know her license was suspended when busted for driving under the influence, nor that she didn't realise she only had 21 days to report to a mandatory alcohol awareness education program.

Paris is due to begin her sentence at a county detention facility on June 5.

"I told the truth," Hilton wailed to the pack of photographers camped outside her Los Angeles home.

"I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel and unwarranted. I don't deserve this."

Her lawyers have confirmed they will appeal "to modify the sentence."

Hilton's mother Kathy was similarly outraged by the sentence -"This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayers' money with this nonsense. It is a joke," she ranted.

Already Hilton's army of devotees have sent messages of support to the former star of 'The Simple Life'. One fan, Joshua Capone, has gone completely O.T.T., writing to The Governator, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, begging him to intervene and keep Hilton out of the slammer.

"She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives," Capone claimed on his My Space page.

Hilton quickly responded on her her own, writing "I just want to thank Joshua so much for his kind words of love and support. God Bless. Love Paris."

Meanwhile Hilton has claimed that her now former publicist, Elliott Mintz, told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and she relied on that.

Paris backflips; rehires publicist
May 09 09:08am

screenshot

Attending lawyer Robert Shapiro's 'Sober Day USA' party, Paris was accompanied by her representative Elliott Mintz, hot on the heels of having sacked him in the wake of being sentenced to a 45-day gaol stay for violating probation.

Mintz claimed that "The rumours of our professional separation were over-exaggerated."

The 26-year-old blonde hotel heiress had claimed that, after being given 36 months probation after pleading "no contest" to reckless driving that Mintz had not informed her that she was banned from driving.

Paris' legal eagles have now launched an appeal against her sentence.

However, not many legal experts give her much chance of being successful in her appeal - an experienced attorney who specialises in driving under the influence (DUI) cases has said that "the prosecutors had a slam dunk case. The evidence was overwhelming that she repeatedly violated her probation."

In an interview prior to being sentenced, Paris claimed that she is regularly pulled over by police so that they can ask for a date with the star of reality TV show 'The Simple Life'.

She told 'Bazaar' magazine: "I think I get in more trouble just because of who I am.

"The cops do it all the time. They'll just pull me over to hit on me. It's really annoying. They're like, 'What's your phone number? Want to go to dinner?'"

Was Paris right to fire her publicist or is ignorance of the law no reason for leniency?

Paris Hilton: the sordid story of 45 days in the slammer
May 11 02:38pm

screenshot

First, there was the initial arrest:

It was in September, 2006, that Paris was first pinged - she registered a blood -alcohol content higher than 0.08, the legal driving limit in California. Pleading no contest to the charge of alcohol-related reckless driving, Hilton was placed on a 36 month good behaviour bond.

Then it happened again:

In January, 2007, Paris was pulled over in her Bentley Continental GTC by the California Highway Patrol.

According to the prosecutor's motion filed in March, Hilton violated at least 3 terms of her DUI probation, after being pulled over for driving above 70 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone. Her license was also suspended at the time.

26-year old Paris is looking at 45 days behind bars at a women's gaol in Century Regional Detention Centre, with her sentence due to begin on June 5, 2007.

Paris promptly blamed everyone but herself, first firing then re-hiring her publicist, Elliott Mintz, after saying that he never told her that she was no longer allowed to drive.

After this, she quickly fired her attorney, hired a new one, and filed motions of appeal against the sentence. Meanwhile, Paris seemed to forget about the sentence, and kept driving her Bentley around town regardless!

Meanwhile, plenty of folks started putting together petitions to both keep her out of - and throw her in - the slammer.

Paris to not serve her full 45 days?
May 15 10:24am

screenshot

Paris Hilton may not have to serve her 45 days at all - petition or no petition.

Instead, due to the overcrowding of Los Angeles county jails, it's entirely possible that if Paris is a good girl she will only be at the State's leisure for a reduced time.

This falls under the 'Good Time, Work Time' banner, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will not know the length of Paris' time behind bars until the day the celebutante reports to serve her sentence

A Sheriff's spokesman said that "At this point, we will not know exactly how much time she will do until the day she is booked."
