Paris Hilton has a knack for attracting attention and always seems to be at the center of things. Sure, some people might feel that this isn't much of a virtue, but Paris is a born self-promoter -- despite her occasional protests to the contrary.

"Paris the Heiress" is first-born in the latest generation of the Hilton family, of swanky hotel fame. Fat trust fund aside, she is also known for being a high-society party girl, part-time model, and quasi-actress.

Paris Hilton sets the standard for the wealthy, twenty-something socialites of the 21st century. Her privileged upbringing as heiress to the Hilton millions and her whirlwind itinerary of partying make her seem like a perfect subject for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.
Even a life that is such an Epicurean feast is not without its hiccups. Paris has garnered unwanted attention in the tabloids for her connections with movie stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Edward Furlong, not to mention a sex tape that made its way onto the Internet. And she hasn't helped matters with her obnoxious conduct at a number of functions and parties at such high-profile venues as the notorious Studio 54, which has been duly publicized by the gutter press.
Nevertheless, Paris has made some efforts to step out of the imposing shadow of the Hilton name. She has established herself as a model and taken the first steps toward starting an acting career, as well as made inroads into the business end of the fashion world. It's too soon to tell just how successful these ventures will be, and whether the name Paris Hilton will ever mean more than a hotel in France.

Sadly, it seems that Paris' reputation as a "poor little rich girl" is justified. While by all accounts Paris has good relationships with her family, especially her sister and party partner Nicky, her public persona tends to be haughty and self-centered. Along with her well-publicized bathroom line-cutting, another example of Paris' self-absorption is that her favorite movie is ****lander -- in which she appears.
As for talent, Paris' ventures in film and fashion entrepreneurship have yet to really take off. But to be fair, merely in her early 20s, Paris still has a lot of time to explore and establish herself as something other than just another excessively wealthy socialite.

But you have to give Paris credit for dropping some of her cash on charities and charitable events, such as a casino night to benefit Harlem's Room to Grow charity. And her trying to make a mark in the real world is commendable (even if it is the rather bogus world of fashion).
Paris' fame remains closer to notoriety than true recognition. She is still a fixture in gossip columns and the tabloid press thanks to her antics at parties and string of high-profile boyfriends, and has now apparently become a role model for other attention starved socialites looking to up their public profile.

Paris Hilton was born on February 17th, 1981, to Rick and Kathy Hilton, making her the great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton hotels and source of the family fortune -- estimated at $300 million. Her grandfather, Conrad "Nicky" Hilton, Jr., also brought some notoriety to the family, as he was the first of Elizabeth Taylor's many ex-husbands. HER sunglasses might have taken on the proportions of a scuba mask, but Paris Hilton appears to have developed a new passion for surfing.
The 26-year-old's coach, Australian big wave champion Koby Abberton, was on hand to dispense some much-needed direction as Hilton took to the waves at Malibu Beach yesterday.
With Abberton's girlfriend, buxom model Tahyna Tozzi, hovering close by, Hilton looked to be mastering the basics of learning to paddle out.
But her devotion to the sport didn't stop her flaunting her trademark fashion as Paris paraded in a skimpy polka-dot bikini.
The heiress' unlikely friendship with Abberton began while she was holidaying in Sydney earlier this year.
The pair were seated next to one another while they judged a bikini competition at Bondi Icebergs in January, and have remained in touch ever since.
Yesterday's surfing lesson provided something of a change of pace for Hilton, who was released from the Century Regional Detention Facility in Los Angeles three weeks ago.
She had served a total of 24 days in jail for a violating her probation on a driving ban - an experience she described as "traumatic" but outlook-changing.
"It gave me a time-out in life to really find out what's important and what I want to do, figuring out who I am. . . . even though it was really hard, I took that time just to get to know myself," she said.
Since then, Hilton has pledged to become a role model for her young fans and to undertake more charity work.

On Sunday, Hilton lolled a short distance offshore under the tutelage of Abberton, who is visiting California.
Hilton and Abberton met in January at the Bondi Icebergs club where they judged a bikini contest for women hoping to become the "face" of a new beer.
Hilton is still revelling in her freedom, after being imprisoned on a drink-driving charge, briefly let out while wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet, and then returned to jail to serve her 22-day sentence.
Abberton has had his own brushes with the law, receiving a nine-month suspended jail sentence for perverting the course of justice after his brother Jai was acquitted of murder in 2005.
The professional big wave surfing champion is travelling in California with his partner, Tahyna Tozzi. The pair attended a party at beachfront house hired by the celebrity Lindsay Lohan on July 4.
US film corporations Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have bought the rights an upcoming film about the Bra Boys, reportedly on the recommendation of the actor Russell Crowe, who narrated a 2006 documentary about the group of surfers produced by Abberton and his brothers.

Her latest squeeze is T-shirt designer Tyler Atkins, with the new couple all over each at the Polaroid Beach House in Malibu last weekend.
Tyler is a 21-year old wunderkind, who runs his own label called Rock Stars And Angels that is available through the likes of trendy L.A. boutiques such as Kitson.
He's also got an Australian connection - he's good friends with Bra Boy celebrity surfer Koby Abberton, who gave Paris surfing lessons and is currently close to one of Paris' friends.
Paris' new beau was even allowed to hold onto her new dog, Cinderella, which is something that she doesn't normally allow any other person to do, as she's over-protective of her pets.
While Paris claimed on 'Larry King Live' that she doesn't dabble with drugs (despite being photographed taking repeated hits from marijuana cigarettes, and talking about having the best pot on her private video tapes that leaked early in 2007), Tyler has his own experiences dating socialites with drug dependencies.
In a video clip available on You Tube, the T-shirt designer claims that he was slipped a mickey by a 'famous chick' he met at a party in the Hollywood Hills...funnily enough, the same suburb that Paris calls home.
"She's like a full pill-popper," he says of his supplier. "She brought out these pills and because I was drunk I went, 'Yeah, [bleep] it - I'll just have one. Why not?'
"And she gave me like four of these pills that were like Vicodin; they were like Rohypnols or something. Heavy, heavy.
"And she drugged me, this famous chick," he continued. "I woke up in her spa bath with her and her best friend. We were in the spa bath, full-on threesome."

THEIR public romance may be a day old, but the love affair between Paris Hilton and her new Aussie boyfriend has already hit a crisis point - requiring its own publicity agent.
In, like, a totally Generation Y development, a photo of local fisho-turned-fashionista Tyler Atkins mocking the blonde jailbird he's now dating surfaced yesterday, embarrassingly on his private MySpace web page.
Entitled "Who the f... is Paris?'', the photo was still on his site yesterday. In it Atkins wears a blonde wig, diamantine tiara and oversized sunglasses in a parody of Hilton's book cover image for her 2005 release Confessions of an Heiress.
But it was comments attributed to Atkins in yesterday's The Daily Telegraph, linking him to group sex and drug taking with a celebrity, that prompted a snap press statement from his agents - confirming his relationship with the party princess but distancing their client from his YouTube musings.

Determined that Lindsay Lohan won't hog all the headlines, Paris Hilton unleashed her inner stripper - ironic, given that Lindsay's just-released film 'I Know Who Killed Me?' tells the tale of a "lady of the pole".
The former jailbird hooked up with Mischa Barton's ex-boyfriend, rocker Cisco Adler, and was spotted playing hide the tongue (down each other's throat) at a club overnight, with Paris responding enthusiastically to Adler's urgings that she should give him a lap dance.
When she wasn't shaking her beaver all over his brown stonewash denims, Paris hit the stage of the bar to serenade the crowd with a cover of "Bette Davis Eyes" as well as a take on her first ever single, "Stars are Blind."
Oh, to not have to arise early in the morning for 'work', but instead spent all night swapping spit with fairly anonymous rockers of dubious talent!

PARTY princess Paris Hilton is $60 million out of pocket after her billionaire grandfather - appalled by her jail term for drink-driving offences - axed her inheritance.
Family patriarch Barron Hilton was already embarrassed by his granddaughter's wild behaviour - notably when her home sex video was leaked on the internet.
But the 79-year-old considered her 23-day sentence last month the last straw.
"He was, and is, extremely embarrassed by how the Hilton name has been sullied by Paris," says Jerry Oppenheimer, who wrote a biography of the clan called House Of Hilton.
"He now doesn't want to leave unearned wealth to his family."
Hilton senior, the only member of the family left with a sizeable stake in the huge hotel chain, has let it be known that he intends to donate to charity the $2.4bn he will gain from this month's sale of the company to private equity firm Blackstone.
The money will go to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the charity set up in the name of the founder of the family business.

Paris Hilton is selling her Hollywood Hills home.
The 1926 Spanish-style house went on the market last Friday for a hot $US4.25 million ($4.95 million) price tag.
“This is a very special celebrity owned home,” according to a description on MLS, the multiple listing service that brokers and customers rely on for a first look at available properties.
The house boasts four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms and includes a separate guest quarter and office. One bedroom was converted into the “ultimate closet”.
Hilton’s publicist, Elliot Mintz, confirmed the house was put up for sale but declined further comment.
The move comes a month after the 26-year-old Hilton walked out of jail after a bizarre, three-week stay in which she was briefly released to home confinement and then sent back screaming to a lockup.
Hilton had been sentenced to a 45-day jail sentence for a probation violation.
A throng of reporters and paparazzi staked out the residence above Sunset Boulevard last month, capturing the celebutante’s move from jail to home and back. The onslaught caused some residents to circulate a letter advising neighbours to call police about the noise and traffic.

The former hotel heir has been spotted on a series of dates with Barton's ex Cisco Adler, according to The Sun newspaper.
Barton split with the Whitestarr frontman in February after naked photos of him surfaced from Hilton's belongings.

But it's all the work of spin doctor Michael Sitrick and his crisis management team, Sitrick & Company, according to the New York Post.
"Paris hired a crisis publicist because of all the negative attention after she got out of jail. But it's just for her public image," one Hollywood insider said.
And those close to the heiress doubt she can keep the good-girl act going too much longer.
"She's being smart right now, but she's a party girl at heart . . . we'll just have to wait and see," dished one pal.
After Hilton's stint in jail, she abandoned longtime publicist Elliot Mintz for Sitrick, who's handled Ryan Phillipe, Rush Limbaugh and Naomi Campbell during their own scandals.
Since then, in addition to dressing more like a classy socialite and avoiding late-night stumbles out of Hollywood clubs, Hilton - who now parties away from the cameras in her Malibu house - has stopped her longtime habit of chatting with photographers.
"You can tell that it's hard for her that she is not supposed to be seeking the attention anymore," said one Hilton lensman.
"She is going to the types of events that her people tell her to go to. But she is definitely staying away from the club scene. Paris is all about her dogs and hanging out alone."

Paris Hilton has topped the list of celebrities used by malware writers to tempt users into downloading a virus.
Security software firm McAfee last month looked at the number of web pages with malware embedded and at spam containing virus attachments.
Celebrities are often used to invite users to click on a malicious link or attachment, and McAfee has drawn up a top 10 list.
Hotel heiress Hilton is number one, followed by pop star Amy Winehouse and footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
The bulk of the list comprised pop stars and models, but seven times world motorbike champion Valentino Rossi made it to number six and French president Nicolas Sarkozy came in at ninth.
"The trend among malware writers is to use things that they think people will go to," said Greg Day, a security analyst at McAfee.
"Hilton was going through her jail fiasco at the time, while Sarkozy ranked so highly because of the French elections."
There were also some local choices that made the list. Swedish Crown Princess Madeleine Bernadotte was eighth due to her enormous popularity in the Nordic area, and Italian model Elisabetta Canalis also polled highly.
