De nada. I was actually only aware of the Paper Lace version, which I hated with a vengeance. It's possible that the song was written for the American band and then hastily covered by the British group when it was a big hit in the US.

It's a bit like Anyone Who Had a Heart, which was a hit for Dionne Warwick in the US, but the only version most Brits know is the cover by Cilla Black that came out later (and prompted Warwick to issue a public statement to Black to keep her thieving hands off Walk On By Laughing )

Or when Julie Covingon had a hit over here with Only Women Bleed and no-one would believe me when I told them the song was written by Alice Cooper!

Laughing Laughing Well I have to say that in a fight between Dionne Warwick and Cilla Black, my money would be on DW. She'd fuck Cilla up big time. DW was born and grew up in East Orange, New Jersey -- which makes Liverpool look like Club Med. Wink

Only Women Bleed was Alice Cooper? Shocked I thought it was Tori Amos. Wink BTW, I also think that Julie Covington would kick Alice Cooper's egotistical golf-playin' ass. Laughing And I would pay a lot of money to see it! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Okay here's what we have so far:

1. Knock Three Times - Tony Orlando and Dawn (Cass)

2. American Pie - Don McLean (CC)

3.
You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie

4. I'm Not In Love - 10cc (CC)(cc)(10cc)(CC)

5. Superstar - Carpenters (CC)

6. Billy Don't Be A Hero - Paper Lace, or Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. Rolling Eyes Very Happy (Cass)

7.
It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.

8. Amie - Pure Prairie League (Cass)

9. I'd like to teach the world to sing - The New Seekers (Cass)

10. Morning After - Maureen McGovern (CC)

11.
Spending all my nights, all my money, going out on the town.
Doin anything just to get you off of my mind.
When the morning comes, I'm right back where I started again,
And tryin to forget you is just a waste of time.

12. Don't Give Up On Us - David Soul (Cass)

Hints for missing 3 songs:

3. Canadian, sappy song from 1977. Artist did a song for the first Rambo movie, First Blood.
7. One of RM's favorite male songwriters/troubadours, and one of his most famous songs, so no more hints. Evil or Very Mad
11. 1978, Los Angeles band, song DID in fact make it onto the UK charts

I'll wait a bit longer in case there are any other participants -- I would bet big bucks that Gnome (for example) would know #7, but he's too busy posting vids and celebs. And if no one gets #7, I'll be verrrry unhappy. Sad

p.s. next set is harder IMRO...

Dionne Warwick played London a couple of years ago and she's still cooler than cool. And she could easily kick Cilla's ass: you may not know this but Cilla is now everyone's favourite (sic) TV presenter - she hosts a truly godawful series called Blind Date, the UK version of The Dating Game. Pass the Vomit Bag.

I guess if push comes to shove, Walk On By would still be in my Top 10 singles of all time.

Only Women Bleed originally came from Alice Cooper's album Welcome to my Nightmare, an underrated collection of songs IMHO.

I'll have nothing bad said about Mr Furnier. He occupies a small but beloved space in my misspent youth. Billion Dollar Babies, School's Out and Killer are all great albums.

Not sure about his recent metal output, but his snide pop/rock stuff is just fine on my turntable. Very Happy

Oh, yeah, but all he does now-a-days is play golf! 7 days a week. Very Happy Oh, and incidentally, AC's Only Women Bleed was a big hit here in the USA, most yanks had probably never heard of Julie Covington at the time. No doubt about it, he was an underrated songwriter, and frankly, ahead of his time. If "Killer" had come out any time in the 1980s instead of 1971, it would have been one of the biggest selling records in the US of all time IMRO.

Well, as a Dionne Warwick fan Cass, my recommendation would be to NOT get her 2006 "My Friends and Me" CD. I got my grubby hands on a free promo copy a while ago, and there's good news and bad news. The good news is that in many of her duets, the guest artists do most of the singing. The bad news is that decades and decades of smoking have finally caught up to DW. You can hear it in her voice. I've got nothing but respect for her, make no mistake about it. And perhaps seeing her "Live" it could be glossed over, or even sound better in a smoky bar. Wink But in Studio, uhhh, nope. Time to put the mike down and look back at a long and incredible career. Just my opinion, PC, don't be hatin'. Confused

And as an American I wouldn't know Cilla Black from Paint it Black! Laughing Except for the fact that I looked her up and saw that she was from Liverpool (speaking of which, 3 days 'til they start asking some questions of Villa). Laughing

==============

Quick: What was the FIRST Australian band to have sustained commercial success in the USA, with 13 American Top 40 Hits?

AC/DC? Nope.
Men at Work? Nope.
Midnight Oil? Nope.
Air Supply? Only half Aussie, and not FIRST.

The Testeagles? Lubricated Goat? Machine Gun Fellatio? Fat Man's Cleavage? Hell no, hell no, hell no, and HELL NO. Laughing

In fact, it was the Little River Band. When I saw them in concert in 1997 (long story, it was an ex-wife thing), they had Peter Beckett with them. Peter Beckett, the one British guy of the band Player, and who wrote the song "Baby Come Back", and they did that song in concert. See, my digression came around full circle. Cool

Harry Chapin? What an incredible man, and the pride (besides Gnome) of Lawn gIsland. More on him at some other time. For now, let me just say ... DON'T buy his studio stuff. The man was born to perform, and "Live" is the way he should be heard. His "Greatest Stories Live" album from 1976 is one of my all-time favorites, maybe even in my Top Ten of all time. Shocked

Next set's a-comin'. Oh yeah, its comin'. Ohhh ... ohhhhh ... Its comin' ... comin' ... !

Circle - Harry Chapin

(chorus)
All my life's a circle,
Sunrise and sundown,
Moon rolls thru the night-time,
'Til the daybreak comes around.
All my life's a circle,
But I can't tell you why,
Season's spinning round again,
The years keep rollin' by.

It seems like I've been here before,
I can't remember when,
But I have this funny feeling,
that we'll all be together again.
No straight lines make up my life,
And all my roads have bends,
There's no clear-cut beginnings,
And so far no dead-ends.

Chorus

I found you a thousand times,
I guess you done the same,
But then we lose each other,
It's just like a chilldren's game;
As I find you here again,
A thought runs through my mind,
Our love is like a circle,
Let's go 'round one more time.

Chorus

Little River Band is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1975 and named after a road sign for the Victorian township of Little River, near Geelong. They were the first Australian rock group to enjoy sustained commercial success in the United States. During their career the band have sold more than 25 million records and scored 13 American Top 40 hits.

The band's original members were lead singer Glenn Shorrock, Graeham Goble and Beeb Birtles, who both played guitar and sang, lead guitarist Ric Formosa, bassist Roger McLachlan, and drummer Derek Pellicci.

Bassist/vocalist Wayne Nelson joined in 1980 and is currently the lead singer. In 1981 he sang lead vocals on their top ten US hit "Night Owls". Guitarist Stephen Housden joined the band in 1981 replacing David Briggs. Housden owns the rights to the name Little River Band. He co-wrote the band's last hit in Australia "Love is a Bridge".

In 1982 Shorrock was **** out of the band and went on to pursue a solo career. He failed to make an impression in the U.S., but he had a substantial hit in Australia with a cover version of Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover".

The pressures of success and constant touring gradually took their toll on LRB and members gradually left. John Farnham replaced Shorrock in 1982 and the first single with Farnham, "The Other Guy" reached #11 in the US. Subsequent singles were only minor hits. In Australia the band continued to be popular and songs such as "Down On The Border" and "Playing To Win" were major hits. Farnham's popularity in Australia was increasing at this time, and he left the band to return to his solo career, achieving huge success in Australia (he was also managed by Wheatley).

Birtles left in 1983 because he did not like the direction the band was taking and he was not a fan of Farnham's onstage performance. Farnham left in 1986 to be replaced by the returning Shorrock(in 1987). Goble left the group in 1992. Shorrock left again in 1996, Derek Pellicci left the band in 1998.

You make me sad, SD. Sad And when I get sad I start posting song lyrics. Thought about doing "Take it easy on me", but instead, I'll go with my favorite LRB song:

Cool Change - Little River Band

If there's one thing in my life that's missing
It's the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool, and bright clear water
Lots of those friendly people
They're showing me ways to go
And I never want to, lose their inspiration

(chorus)
Time for a cool change
I know that it's time for a cool change
Now that my life is so prearranged
I know that it's time for a cool change

Well, I was born in the sign of water
And it's there that I feel my best
The albatross and the whales, they are my brothers
It's kind of a special feeling
When you're out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon like a lover

Chorus

I've never been romantic
And sometimes, I don't care
I know it may sound selfish
But let me breathe the air
Yeah, yeah
Let me breathe the air

If there's one thing in my life that's missing
It's the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool, and bright clear water
It's kind of a special feeling
Out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon, like a lover

Chorus x2

(Time for a cool change)
It's time, it's time
It's time, it's time
For a cool, cool change
(Time for a cool change)
I know it's time for a cool change
(Time for a cool change)
Now that my life is so prearranged
Well, I know, I know
I know, I know
(Time for a cool change)
It's time for a cool change
Yes, it is, yes, it is yes, it is
You know it's time for a cool change

Diamantina Drover

The faces in the photograph have faded
And I can't believe he looks so much like me
For it's been ten years today
Since I left for Old Cork Station
Sayin' I won't be back till the drovin's done

For the rain never falls on the dusty Diamantina
And a drover finds it hard to change his mind
For the years have surely gone
Like the drays from Old Cork Sta-ation
And I won't be back till the drovin's done

Well it seems like the sun comes up each mornin'
Sets me up and takes it all away
For the dreaming by the light
Of the camp fire at ni-ight
Ends with the burning by the day

For the rain never falls on the dusty Diamantina
And a drover finds it hard to change his mind
For the years have surely gone
Like the drays from Old Cork Sta-ation
And I won't be back till the drovin's done

Sometimes I think I'll settle back in Sydney
But it's been so long it's hard to change my mind
For the cattle trail goes on and on
And the fences roll forever
And I won't be back till the drovin's done

For the rain never falls on the dusty Diamantina
And a drover finds it hard to change his mind
For the years have surely gone
Like the drays from Old Cork Sta-ation
And I won't be back till the drovin's done

SD, sounds like Australian folk music, yes? I like this verse:

Well it seems like the sun comes up each mornin'
Sets me up and takes it all away
For the dreaming by the light
Of the camp fire at ni-ight
Ends with the burning by the day

Never heard of that song, though didn't LRB have an album with Diamantina in the title (can't remember, I jettisoned all their old stuff for greatets hits albums)? Anyway, got any songs about Budgies? Very Happy

Here's my second set, following the same theme as the last (A.M. Radio of the 70s). Some easy ones here, to be sure ... some "gimme's" ... can o' corn ... but also some harder ones, and shockly, I'll be franked if anyone (even SD) gets a certain couple without googling. Shocked Prove me wrong, gents. Cool

1.
It's not time to make a change, just relax, take it easy
You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down, if you want, you can marry
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy

2.
I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain

3.
Running around as you do
With your head up in the clouds
I was like you
Never had time to lay back,
Kick your shoes off, close your eyes
I was like you
Now you're not hard to understand
You need someone to take your hand

4.
You are sunshine, you are shadows,
You are morning, you are night
You are hard times, you are good times,
You are darkness, you are light.

5.
Come hold me close, yeah
Never release me (Oh, baby, don't release me)
Open your arms, let my love in (let me in, let me in, let me in)
Love me tonight, yeah
Love me forever, and ever (you know I can't forget you)

6.
See the curtains hangin' in the window,
In the evening on a Friday night.
A little light a-shinin' through the window,
Lets me know everything is alright.

7.
Never been awake, never seen a day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning
Lazy day in bed, music in my head
Crazy music playing in the morning light

8.
Took away our ways of life
The tomahawk and the bow and knife
Took away our native tongue
And taught their English to our young
And all the beads we made by hand
Are nowadays made in Japan

9.
There are times when a woman has to say what's on her mind
Even though she knows how much it's gonna hurt
Before I say another word, let me tell you "I love you"
Let me hold you close, and say these words as gently as I can.

10.
I've had nothing but bad luck
Since the day I saw the cat at my door
So I came here to you, sweet lady
Answering your mystical call
Crystal ball on the table
Showing the future, the past
Same cat with them evil eyes
And I knew it was a spell she'd cast.

11.
Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter

12.
You like your life in a free-form style
You'll take an inch but you'd love a mile
There never seems to be quite enough
Floating around to fill your lovin' cup

I'll nab four...

6) Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers

7) Magic by Pilot (strangely enough, I heard this song just the other day for the first time in decades... I was watching this crappy British comedy movie called Magicians and it was used as the theme song. Didn't the lead singer David Paton later sing as part of the Alan Parsons Project...?)

10) Devil Woman by Cliff Richard
