I had five Klaatu albums but I think most of them didn't have lyric sheets with them.

The Bomber by the James Gang is an old favorite but another one I never saw a lyric sheet for. I think Joe's parents were just finding out about this time that Rides Again came out that he wasn't attending Kent State full time like they thought he was.

I probably had an early UFO album too, on 8-track.

I don't remember there ever being lyrics sheets in any of The James Gang albums. That's the first lines of the song and easy to make out. This album and Deep Purple's In Rock were the albums that got me hooked on metal.
Like I wrote, at first Klaatu didn't put ANYTHING on their albums to ID anything. That debate over them being the re-formed Beatles was largely responsible for the success of that first album due to the publicity it generated, but it all backfired in the long run. The public was pretty pissed off for what was seen as a deliberate con job and the following albums didn't sell well at all. Too bad, because they easily had the talent to make it honestly. Even those later, overlooked, albums had some good material on them.
UFO...they were and still are great. Rock Bottom is a classic, Try Me deserves to be on any "rock anthem" anthology, and several of their more recent stuff is really good. Michael Schenker is one of the elite guitarists ever, but he stood like a statue the few times I got to see him. He opened for Ted Nugent once and while Nugent was a better showman, Schenker blew him away technically.

(The version of #7 that was floating around for years before the different (and worse for some reason!) one that was eventually released on WTLO was from a radio broadcast, so I wonder if it was with Peel?)

OK, the ice is broken and the theme should be pretty obvious. Come on, 90's indie music fans, make me proud. Smile D-7 is the only cover I included, just because I really like it. The rest are (I am fairly certain) originals. The key to the extra bonus (which is not part of the theme) is Trigger.

Sorry Tzman, I'm normally around but last week I was ... not. That was a very good set, though quite difficult for a pRon forum (as opposed to a music forum). Wink Its a shame that you used Darkstars previous Aussie Set of Death as a guideline ... that set was the hardest I've ever seen here in 2.5 years, and honestly I think he was mostly fuckin' with us non-Aussies. And the other Aussies in the forum don't frequent this thread. Hell, I could easily do an all-American set that would blow away any non-Yanks, but what would be the point? Eh.

Someday soon, I'm going to do an all-Aussie set, but I'll try to make it a little easier for non-Aussies, uhhh, since I am one. I guess I could just blame ABRAXAS for the whole thing, since it was HE who originally suggested it to SD. Damn Administrators, always causing trouble ... and editing my posts too! Laughing Laughing (JK, Braxy and I are as thick as thieves, I hope).

Great idea of using the pictures, but I think most people had given up. Very Happy Looking back on your set, I would have only gotten a few, like The Call, Mott the Hoople, and the Kansas songs. As well as the Gary Moore, which hopefully makes up for the fact that I didn't know the James Gang song. Embarassed

I tried to follow Gary Moore after Thin Lizzy, but he honestly went "all over the place" for the next couple of decades. Really good blues guitarist ... at times. Very Happy "Over the Hills and Far Away" was a song from the mid-80s I think, but more importantly its on a "Greatest Hits" compilation of his which I have (called Out in the Fields) and which is why I recognized it. Embarassed Greatest Hits compilations are good for artists like him, IMRO. Not that his other stuff isn't good, I'm sure some of it is. But ... damn ... all over the place. Cool Always thought it strange that it had the same song title of the awesome Led Zep song, but was totally different ... I mean, for a 6 word song title, that's weird ... there must be a reason though.

Anyway thanks for joining in, will be good to have your fine self in here with all of that musical know-how. Shocked

Man, if we are going to start going impossibly obscure, then here's a list of obscure songs from MY era. And I've even made it easy, after a fashion, with a very obvious thread running through all selections.

Now BE, don't get yer panties in a wad, amigo. We had a couple wayyy hard sets there, and yeah ... probably any one of us could make a "set of death" that would stump the bejesus out of everybody.

I mean, for example, all anyone would have to do is to take a bunch of quotes from lesser-known Nirvana songs and rarities. For example. Laughing I'm just sayin'. Cool

Now dude, I am also a huge Nirvana fan, own most of their stuff, have studied much of Kurt's lyrics, blah blah blah. That said, you still got me on some of those. Sad Sheesh. You're not Krist Novaselic in disguise, are you? Shocked

2. Nirvana - Floyd the Barber (from 1989's Bleach)

4. Nirvana - Downer (also from Bleach)

5. Nirvana (why do I keep writing it?) - Big Long Now, a great song from their first "rarities" album Incesticide (1992)

9. Nirvana (I can't stop myself) - Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip. Great song, but not available on the original US release of In Utero (1993). Had to get it elsewhere. Wink

10. Nirvana ( Rolling Eyes ) - You Know You're Right. I have it on that greatest hits album from 2002, and I remember it being played on the radio around then. Something about an unreleased song, and one of their final recordings with Kurt ... can't remember.

No idea on Bonus 1, but Bonus 2 ... you have got to be kidding me. How the ferk do you know that song? Laughing Laughing Did you use to be a milkman? Laughing Laughing That is way before your time, youngster!! And WTF does Benny Hill have to do with Nirvana? Razz WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU SMOKING, BOYO? Laughing

Bonus 2: Ernie, aka the Fastest Milkman in the West - Benny Hill

Ernie was only fifty-two, he didn't want to die,
Now he's gone to make deliveries in that milkround in the sky.

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks guys. Let's return to "normal" soon though. Wink

Thanks for the pat on the back ramblin' man. It didn't take long to realize that two hard sets in a row was pushing it a bit too much but I had fun coming up with the list AND the hint pics.

Well, how do you like that. Ironically enough, I just finished watching/listening to "About A Boy" and decided to give the thread a look-see. And there it is. Put to bed by the impressive lyrical prowess of Sean Penn and Waylon Jennings. Thank you, gentlemen. Smile

1. Spank Thru (JS)

And the flowers sing in D m i n o r
And the birds fly happily
We’ll be together once again my love
I need you back oh baby baby

2. Floyd The Barber (RM)

Barney ties me to the chair
I can’t see, I’m really scared
Floyd breathes hard, I hear a zip
Pee-pee pressed against my lips

3. Been A Son (JS)

She should have stood out in the crowd
She should have made her mother proud
She should have fallen on her stance
She should have had another chance

4. Downer (RM)

Sickening pessimist hypocrite master
Conservative communist apocalyptic bastard
Thank you dear God for putting me on this Earth
I feel very privileged in debt for my thirst

5. Big Long Now (RM)

I’m not interesting
She’s not turning green
Shameful as it seems
Can we show our faces now?

6. Blandest (JS)

And the situation wasn’t quite
As intense as I thought
I need you around
To remind me what not to become

7. Opinion (JS)

And there seems to be a problem here
And the scale of emotions seems too clear
Now they rise and fall like wall street stock
And they have an effect on our peace talk

8. D7 (JS) Wipers cover

Standing on the stairs
Cold, cold morning
Ghostly image of fear
Mayday, mayday

9. Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip (RM)

And then Perry Ellis came along with his broom,
And his silk
And he, he erected a beautiful city
A city of stars

10. You Know You're Right (RM)

It’s another point of view
Look at me when I was you
I could never die again
I won’t lose another friend

BONUS 1. Do Re Mi (JS)

And if I do and if I like
Find me out and see me
And if I may cold as ice
I might have to see me dream

BONUS 2. Benny Hill - Ernie, The Fastest Milkman in the West (RM)
(not at all related to previous 11 songs, but inspired by previous posts)

One lunch time Ted saw Ernie's horse and cart outside her door,
It drove him mad to find it was still there at half past four.
And as he leapt down from his van hot blood through his veins did course,
And he went across to Ernie's cart and didn't half kick his 'orse.
His name was "Trigger"
And he pulled the fastest milkcart in the West.

I wish. Think of all the great stories I would have. Sad I remember going looking for a record store while in Mexico to find the European release of In Utero. Still don't get why record lables do stupid crap like that. Question On The Mountain was around as a bootleg, but after Hole covered it with the newer title on Unplugged it spurred my first major foray into using the internet for something beyond email - finding and downloading bootlegged Nirvana, and then recording a tape by playing from the computer speakers. All things considered, it made a remarkably good quality tape. Very Happy But I'll never forget the day that I went out running a few years ago with my walkman radio (I know that I have now completely lost any yungrr members who may be reading this thread with my back-to-back fogey references to "cassettes" and "walkmans" Rolling Eyes ) when suddenly, with no warning, a studio version of YKYR came on. I just about ran off the sidewalk into the bushes, and ended up standing still to listen to the first "new" Nirvana since MTV released the Unplugged In NY album a decade earlier. A little surreal. I had had a similar experience at the gym with Verse Chorus Verse, but that was back in the mid 90's when it was to be expected that there might still be a few tracks I had not yet heard. As for "Ernie," my Dad had 45's (no, not a firearm k1d$ Laughing ) of that and lots of other classics such as In The Year 2525, Mr. Bojangles, and others I can't recall off the top of my head. I will give credit where credit is due - I definitely grew up with a lot of the good music of the 60's and early 70's because of my Dad. Much as it pains me to give him too much credit for anything. Smile Maybe one day I will do a Simon & Garfunkel list... Twisted Evil

Gosh, I hope you didn't, tzman. My problem is that I am a bit of a "wiseass," and while almost everything I type is said in my head with a smirk, the sense of jest does not often translate properly to my posts, and I end up sounding like a plain old "ass" instead. But believe me, while I may respond to jerks with jerkiness, I otherwise never post anything that is not intended as tongue-in-cheek. But a lot of people probably think I am a tool with his head..."between two pillows."

Absolutely no offense was intended. In fact, I actually enjoyed the puzzle of your photographic hints, and was only disappointed by my complete failure to solve them. If anything, the two successive 'black diamond' lists emboldened me to not only do an all Nirvana list, but to at times go to 2nd and 3rd verses to find lyrics that might befuddle even me out of context. Smile

Ok folks, here's another set. There is one bonus, and it's in FRENCH Shocked . It was a pretty famous song, so maybe one of you might guess what the name is.

1.

Yesterday it seemed to me
My life was nothing more than wasted time
But here today you softly changed my mind

2.

High on diesel and gasoline, psycho for drum machine
Shaking their bits to the hits

3.

you look so cold tonight.
Your lips feel like winter,
Your skin has turned to white, your skin has turned to white

4.

I`d have thought
That with time
Thoughts of her
Would leave my head

5.

The nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs action when you got words

6.

Oh I saw you by the wall
Ten of your tin soldiers in a row
With eyes that looked like ice on fire
The human heart a captive in the snow

7.

A crown of horns
An image formed deformed
The mark I've borne
A mark of scorn to you

8.

Defecting Russian dancers dance into Hockney prints
Exclusive to Bloomingdales, gift-wrapped in red
From the land of blue rinse

9.

Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic,
slam, but neck, right? Right.

10.

What is happening here
Something's going on that's not quite clear
Somebody turn on the lights
We're gonna have a party
It's starting tonight

bonus

Je vais je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Je vais et je viens
Je me retiens
Non! maintenant

At first read, I know them all but #5. What sort of crappy, 2nd rate band would write (or cover) such asinine lyrics? Laughing

And a French bonus that is not Edith Piaf or early Celine Dion (or perhaps Alizee since she is hot enough that many music fans who might visit a place such as this probably know who she is)? Confused The lyrics actually reminded me of one of Bill Cosby's old routines on men and women:

The man is always constant. He is always: "arghlarghlarghl."
The woman is also constant, but she is always: "Come here come here come here, no get away get away get away."
