Around the late 60s that song was notorious because, in addition to music, it was supposed to include sounds of them having sex. Today, that would be on a top 40 hit, but then it was a real scandal. I heard it a couple of times, but I'd forgotten all about it.

I thought billyellis had answered them after a fashion, so I've been waiting for him to put them up.
I don't know them all, but those I do know are.

1. Chicago- Baby What a Big Surprise
Their first album was released as Chicago Transit Authority, but the real CTA raised hell so they had to shorten the name.

3. Cat Stevens- Lady D'Arbanville
Any Harold and Maude fans here?

6. Elton John- Nikita

9. REM- The End of the World as We Know It

it sure is Embarassed

I find it hilarious that Chicago goes out of their way not to mention Pete Cetera in any of their recent reunion tours. They do talk about how much they miss their first lead singer.

"Color My World" is an outstanding song.

The Doobie Brothers go out of their way not to mention Michael MacDonald, either.

Actually no. That was me being humorous. I know #5 because it was (I suspect) deliberately put in there because of my list.

And, while I don't know Nirvana stuff very well, I figured that must be #5 for the same reason plus your tongue through the side of the cheek comment. Is it?
BTW Anyone ever see Chicago live back in the Cetera day? I did and was shocked how awful he sounded. It may have just been an off day for him, but to this day I've never heard anyone else who sounded so different than their recorded stuff. And yes, I know I'm leaving a door wide open there.

OK, OK. I was trying to give someone else a chance to get one, rather than jump all over it myself. Smile

5. Nirvana - "Plateau"

It is a Meat Puppets cover from the Unplugged performance, during which they brought the Kirkwood brothers on stage to do 3 of their songs. My favorite is "Oh, me" which was not part of the broadcast but was one of the 3 (?) extra songs included on the CD release that had been edited out of the TV show.

Shocked Gasp! Homer Simpson scream! Laughing My first thought was that with a name like "tzman" you must be from some far away place like "Tasmania" or something, so I was going to let you off the hook. But then I saw that your location is "USA." For shame, sir. For shame. Razz

I did notice your modification to Homer's face for the first time, though. I like it. Very Happy

Close, it's Tanzania actually. Lived there, not from there.
I knew I was risking the wrath of the masses by admitting my ignorance of Nirvana. It must be like somebody asking me Who's the Who?
I'm glad you like Homer. I think he's saying "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, pussy!"

The only two songs I can think of are "Come as you are" and the one Weird Al parodied

OK, I'll bite. What Chicago number is that song from? I have a handle on Chicago up through #5 and then it was all over for them in my opinion. Probably because Terry Kath semed to have lost interest [Poem 58 is a favorite guitar workout from CTA, I think of it as the theme music for Dwayne Hoover's lunatic rampage from Breakfast of Champions] and when they did CTA they also had most of the material for #2 & #3. #4 was the then giant four disc live set that also had a great booklet with it listing the dates and locatons of where they played from the beginning (i.e high schools).

I think Cetera decided to speak no more of Chicago before they decided to speak no more of him. But who's left of the original lineup now? Once they decided to become a corporation (also around the time of #5) they seemed to really get on the kick of voting one another out of the band.

Most of the songs the Doobies are known for came before Michael McDonald joined the band. Hell, they even had enough for a greatest hits collection before he signed on, which was largely because Tom Johnston had some ulcers and couldn't tour.

I liked Nirvana quite a bit too but I guess not enough to brand their lyrics into my brain. But the shit I do remember - a thank you buried in the liner notes of a CD from 18 years ago by one obscure singer to another one who wouldn't become slightly known until five years later. That's the way it goes sometimes, again.

I didn't remember so I had to check. XI I would have guessed earlier than that. While looking, I also found out that Carl Wilson (Beach Boys) and Cetera's brother Tim sang back up vocals on it.

They didn't get a Grammy until Micheal Macdonald began to influence the sound of the Doobie Brothers. I think it was their only nomination. He gave them more of a Jazz influence. They exploded off the charts. (Until they broke up)

You have a point 'Bob, they did sell more records then but many of their original fans from the Toulouse St. and Captain and Me era were gone feeling they'd gotten too commercial by this point. Same thing happened to (Fill in the blank)____________________________________
BTW One of the other Steely Dan guys to work with the Doobies was Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Any idea what HE'S been up to the last few years, besides music? Cool

Jeff has been a US defense department contractor going back the last few years. Having a way with those effects pedals and recording studios can get you into some unusual places.

He was also on the Firesign Theater's Fighting Clowns back in 1980. Maybe the cover art for that record spoke to him and said that was the way to go.
