Now Genesis before 1983 ish, wellll, that's another matter.

Selling England By The Pound. With a lot of bands and artists that have had their BIG selling album it is usually the album that comes before that is often times the finer piece of work and sets the stage so to speak for the big seller. And just as often the album that came after the big seller has frequently been pretty lacking if not outright awful.

Strewth, Otis. "Selling England..." was awesome, along with Foxtrot, Trespass, Nursery Cryme, etc. And as much of a Peter Gabriel fan as I am/was (one of the greatest songwriters ever IMRO), I think Phil was a better singer, but it took a couple albums. Lamb Lies Down was great, but they were transitioning at that point. My own favorites are the 2 from the mid-1970s: A Trick of the Tail, and Wind and Wuthering -- good balance of the progressive stuff and the more lyrical rock, with Phil doing smashingly good on vocals. After that I still liked them (up until 1983), but they were clearly more "poppy" ... that said, they were still really good, some great songs on Duke for example.

Let me tie off that set now and clear the way for anyone else to have a go. Lord Darkstar willin', of course. Wink

1. Possession - Sarah McLachlan (BillyEllis).

2. Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot (1/2 to AKAbob, 1/2 to Abraxas).

3. Take Me Away - Avril Lavigne (Jeff "Don't call me a chicken" Spicoli)

4. Free Man in Paris - Joni Mitchell (Sir_Darkstar)

5. Brian Wilson - BareNaked Ladies (Venerable Retiree SD)

6. Anniversary Song - Cowboy Junkies (1/2 to Jeff, who got the correct name of the album but not the correct name of the song). Always loved Margo Timmin's smoky voice, and that cover of Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground) they did in the late 1980s is simply sublime. Cool

7. Red Barchetta - Rush (that pot-smokin' surfin' dude)

8. You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet - Bachman Turner Overdrive (AKAbob).

9. Pacing the Cage - Bruce Cockburn (Ringo) In case anyone isn't familiar with this songwriting genius, his last name is pronounced "KO-burn". Laughing

10. Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane (Gnaughty Billy).

11. Bobcaygeon - The Tragically Hip (2 points to B-B-B-B-B-RAXY). Great get Mr. Abraxadministrator. Very Happy

If ya'll get nothing else out of this, check out the Hip if you're not familiar with them. Really an awesome band. Had the privilege to see them live a couple times in San Francisco. Trying to think how my fellow yanks might know them ... I believe they played at Woodstock '99 ... they might have done a music guesting shot on Saturday Night Live ... eh. Try an album like "Phantom Power" from the late 1990s (which features the above song), or some of their older stuff like "Up to Here". Or maybe a greatest hits compilation, called "Yer Favourites" from just a couple years ago (2004 or 2005?).

Good job gentlemen, and thanks for playin'. Feel free to have a go anyone. Very Happy

the totally Aussie quizz
All acts ARE Australian and if not we claim them anyways lol

1 - When I walk down the street, see the people who stop and stare and say, havent I seen that face somewhere a long time ago.

2 - I will come for you at night time, I will raise you from your sleep, I will kiss you in four places, I'll go running along your street

3 - That late in the night when the lights are all out, then she slips off her stockings and shoes, she makes you her lover and lets you discover, the smiles she keeps, she keeps for you.

4 - I just wanted to kiss someone, I got the moondog blues, You just happened to be standing there, So won't you tell me, Won't you tell me the truth

5 - But Ah! Who needs that sentimental bullshit, anyway, takes more than just a memory to make me cry

6 - I've got something to tell her, maybe she'll listen maybe not, I love that woman like a never before, cos all my love shes got.

7 - The planes are a-crashin', The cars are a-smashin', The cops are a-bashin', oh yeah, The k-i.d-s. are a-fightin', The fires are a-lightin', The dogs are a-bitin', oh yeah

8 - You only came for a smile, Even though you're really not my style,
I didn't think that you'd run me 'round like you do

9 - No thank you sir, Ah, c'mon, I'm a trustworthy guy, No thank you sir,
Oh little girl I wouldn't tell you no lie, I know your game, How can you say that, we only just met, You're all the same, Ooh, she's got me there, but I'll get her yet

10 - They're all dressed up to kill, Lean on the window sill, Lookin' your way with eyes of fire

BONUS
THE HARD ONE MAYBE

11 - And she said Daddy-Daddy at school today, Somebody told me a lie,
And after hearin' what she had heard, I told her not to cry - it hurt to see her cry

Embarassed This is humiliating...but until you posted that I thought those were the real lyrics. Embarassed Kill me. Kill me now.

[Interesting thought (at least to me): with the demise of the CD (and the accompanying booklet often containing lyrics), how many songs will we not know the correct lyrics to in the future? The internet is available for lines that are completely unintelligible and make us look them up, but without the ritual of reading through the booklet of the new album you just bought, what about all the lines like the one above that are seemingly straightforward? Hmm...]

And if you were just a young lad at the festival, then you aren't THAT much older. Laughing But I was only just getting into music at that point, my epiphany being Slippery When Wet the year before.

So what you're saying is that sometimes the previous album was good, and sometimes it wasn't? Laughing I think a better generality might be that if the previous record was good too, then this is an act that may last, whereas if the previous record was terrible, they will likely be one-hit wonders.

Then again, who determines whether the previous album was good or not? The new, mainstream fans, or the fans who have followed a band since before they hit it big commercially? For example, ask 100 people who own Nevermind what they think about Bleach and you will probably get a bimodal distribution of responses based on whether they are Top 40 music listeners or underground neo-punk music fans.

Damn, I couldnt come close to guessing even one. Good list, SD. I
will leave it for greater minds (and RM as well) to cough up
the correct answers. And where has Mr. Gnome gone?
Perhaps he had his parole revoked again else he`d likely have gotten one or two.

Complete blank, but if this is an all Down Under list and Crowded House or Men At Work or Midnight Oil are not included, that would be a crime. Surprised

I didn't recognize any Little River Band lyrics in any of those, either, so I am stumped.

Oh, it's been interesting watching your post count creep up to this last milestone; kind of like watching an odometer roll past 100,000. Congrats.

Most but not all, ok all but one are from the 70's, with some of Australias finest talent, oh ok two, one from the 60's maybe the british will have some idea as they did tour the world many times as a support act. the other was covered only a decade ago by a well know hard rock band.

yea i kinda figured LRB was a dead set giveaway but most of the artists are from the same period.

Yes and no, the bay city rollers released a cover of the song in 1976. the original was written by Vanda & Young and released in Australia in March 1975 which gave this artist his first number 1 in Australia and it reached #42 on the Cashbox top one hundred in the USA.

... And that's half a point more than I'll be getting. Sad

JFC Darkstar.

If its Australian groups/artists from the 1970s and before, and its not AC/DC, Little River Band, Air Supply, Helen Reddy, Bee Gees, early Midnight Oil, early Split Enz, or Olivia Newton-John (if any of the quotes above are from famous songs in the USA by any of those I've listed, I'll be quite embarrassed Embarassed ), then I'm up shit's creek and pouring a 4X over my head while sitting on the rough end of a pineapple without a shrimp on the barbie.

However, based on my 2.5 years experience in this thread, I'll just guess Smokie, the Angels, the Easybeats, or the Hunters and Gatherers for every single one. Laughing Laughing Laughing

RM

p.s. what the ferk is the "Cashbox top 100"? Confused Is that anything like Billboard, or Rolling Stone, or American Top 40?

p.p.s. RM's Evil Twin secretly starts to gather up quotes for his "List of Death". Twisted Evil

Even RM caved in, the wimp. Where`s Mr. G. when we need him?

Yeah, watch out, at my rate of 0.85 posts per day -- that's cheetah speed baby -- and only showing up every so often, I'll be at 1010 before the end of July. Laughing Laughing

My getting to 1000 posts is one of the bigger non-events in FP history. Except for a few small vids, I haven't posted any pRon in a couple of years! Rolling Eyes Laughing Then again, in my 1000 posts I'll have enough WORDS for 8000 posts! Cool Maybe I'll get Svinto to do an accurate appraisal of my posts to get a more realistic count! Laughing Laughing

Oh, and Braxy -- SD was talking about the second "list" of artists I mentioned. I think he's telling us that the list includes a song by the Easybeats, the Angels, and the Hunters and Collectors (Gatherers, whatever, same difference). Razz As far as their song being covered by Pearl Jam, I'll bet 1000 posts that it isn't a song that PJ did on any of their studio albums, probably just a song they covered live on one of their tours (and I have very little live PJ, argh).

Since I was guessing that list for every song, I should get 3 half-points!! Okay, I'll take a half-point penalty for thinking that Smokie was Australian ... just as long as I finish with one point, putting me ahead of that Insane in the Birdbrain Jeff Spicoli. Wink

I don't think there are any songs in the set from my first list, e.g. AC/DC, and yeah, those were the more famous ones (in the US, anyway). Sad And we need some other Aussies in here, STAT. Where's Burn, and Reign, and GMC, and Jejejejejejejeje, and Oobz, and Jeremy, and ...

Hell, I don't even have anything substantive to contribute here, since if you are talking pre-80's and it isn't the Beatles, Beach Boys or Simon & Garfunkel, I am more useless than a penis at a lesbian orgy. Sad
