It's the curse of the A-Rod. The new curse in baseball. Ever since they acquired that A-Rod, they have been cursed. The Yankees won't win anything with that guy on their team.

A-Rod is a lying douchebag. I hope they don't let him into the Hall of Fame. That place should be reserved for those who really were great and who didn't need to take a bunch of drugs to play well.

And they have the disadvantage of having to play each other a lot of times. There are four decent teams in that division, with Tampa surging, Boston on fire, and New York doing okay. If Toronto could have their two highest paid players actually earn their paychecks (Wells and Rios), they would be contenders as well. Either that, or have healthy pitchers.

As much as it pains me to say this...all hail the Yankees at this point. Crying or Very sad

Tampa just announced they are finished competing after 1.5 seasons by trading away the best starter in their franchise's history. Toronto has completely given up. Boston's injuries finally caught up to the point where a top 5 offense disappeared for two months and the deepest rotation in baseball is now reduced to 3 quality starters, one of whom did not start the season with the team (Buchholz), and a bunch of fill-ins.

HOWEVER...if Boston can patch it together (and Beckett is not hurt again) and hold off Texas and Tampa down the stretch for the WC, Yankees fans will once again be on popping the valium, since their best pitchers have either zero postseason experience or have traditionally sucked in the playoffs. Should be interesting in September...

Money talks, and having a payroll bigger than most countries they should be the top team in the league. Without some sort of salary cap, is there any way team like Baltimore or Toronto can compete in the AL East? Maybe if they fluke out like the Rays did last year, but with the payroll of the Yankees and Red Sox, the other teams can't compete every year. Imagine if the Yankees could only spend 100 million a year. I'm not a big baseball fan, and this massive salary difference is one of the reasons why. It's not a level playing field, not even close.

All I can say is I was watching Monday Night Football last night and that blowhard Berman came on with an update stating Gorilla Face Pettite had a Perfecto going...so I had to go and be a good hater and route for the O's. Well, no sooner did I get over there that the RF (don't know who it was), almost misplayed a lazy fly ball and was all goofy with smiles. Next batter hit one "fairly hard" to quote that incompetent Michael Kay which Hairston proceeded to boot. Well, I was mighty pleased and said now it's time to break up the no hitter! Well, to my good fortune Markakis (god bless his soul) stroked one between Hairston and the line and I was positively giddy indeed. Didn't matter any longer! Twisted Evil

Well, back to the bigger picture...it's going to be tough for anyone to beat them but it will all come down to pitching and timely hitting as anything can happen in the playoffs. Even though they've had a rough go of it lately, the Sawks have had their number in October of late and if they have to play the Halos well, that could lead to an early exit.

They are the hottest team in the game right now and will definitely be the ones nobody want to face, but I hold out hope for continued tears in da Bronx!

My tears started before the Allstar break...

I just don't want the Yankees or the Red Sox to win the World Series. Anyone else would be fine with me.

Hmmmm, not really a debate per se, rather a place for us jealous types to vent about that uber successful organization.
And I wouldn't go as far to say it's dying - hardly - it is firmly entrenced as the #2 sport in the land generating record revenue year over year (this year not withstanding due to the slumping world economy).
Yeah, the NFL has surpassed it and is by far #1 but I think the NBA is shrinking at an exponential rate - I barely know anyone that watches or cares. I certainly don't; and it's been at least 10 years.

I see you're a Brit and well, I love the football over there; watch as much as I can. I reckon you watch a bit, eh?

I'm not a huge baseball fan. In fact, most games bore me to death. It makes Soccer look exciting by comparison.

Uh, first off anyone who would actually think this was a North-South thread rather than a baseball thread from the title must be from the Deep South. Like the crazy ex who won't believe it's over, I guess some southerners still hatefully refer to the North as 'Yankees' because they still won't accept they lost a war 150 years ago. These are the same people, BTW, who would include the WWE in a list of legitimate sports. What's next? Nascar? I guess even hardcore race-in-a-circle fans have to pipe down seeing as Nascar is the fastest-shrinking sport-related business in the last few years. Rolling Eyes

This I can understand. Everyone was rooting for the Sox in 2004, but fatigue has set in. Imagine if Tim Tebow was signed to pitch for them? There would be riots pelting the stadium with tomatoes before every game. Laughing Still got to support my team though. Wink

Actually that wasn't half as bad as Tim McCarver over on Fox, who spent 20 minutes explaining in great detail with graphics and a telestrator that "See, what the pitcher, who is the guy throwing the ball toward the hitter, is trying to do in this situation is to get the small round thing past the wooden stick of the guy in the different uniform. At the same time the guy with the stick wants to swing the stick and hit the white object as it passes him." And so on...

I didnt realise NBA was in such a state; all we get over here is pictures of celebs front row at the Lakers, if that. But thats got sweet-FA to do with basketball.
As for football. Yeah, the biggest sport in the world. Everyone knows something about it. My opinion the Worldcup is bigger then the Olympics

The economic downturn is hurting a lot of sports and they are just starting to feel the full effects of it. Baseball is hurting in a lot of places, with lower attendance, and even the NFL is feeling it a bit. The sport most effected is the LPGA. They had to dump a lot of their schedule because they couldn't get sponsors. Even the Yankees had a hard time selling their luxury seats.
