Of all the hosts permitted here, I think MegaUplaod is the fairest to both uploaders and downloaders. You can upload and download for free with fairly gracious file retention times and a 45 second wait period for downloading. Unlike some hosts, the wait time for subsequent free downloads doesn't get longer...

I agree with the aforementioned, especially with regards to increased wait time being a consideration for HotFile, DepositFiles, SharingMatrix, etc when downloading subsequent files on the 'free' side.

How many members actually come here to download ONLY one or two files per session? I am guessing "not many". Smile

MegaUpload is generally upload/download friendly, stable, has withstood the test of time, and it is already on the approved list. Smile

For those who cross-post their links to other forums: MegaUpload appears to be accepted on pretty much every other major forum; whereas, 'cash hosters' are more frequently not allowed.

Personally, I prefer to contribute and download in an environment where 'cash hosting' is not endorsed. The lack of 'cash hosting' is one of the features that make this forum a great place to visit, IMO.

I like MultiUpload. It spreads the files to all the major hosts.

The MultiUpload link indexing service has demonstrated repeated stability/availability issues on other boards, when attempts were made to download. As a result, I would be reluctant to rely solely on the primary MultiUpload index link as the only means for file download.

Obviously, posting the individual file host links would prevent MultiUpload indexing issues from hindering the ability to download the file, and this is generally what I would recommend as a precaution with any file spreading service.

Side note: The ability to multihost and 'fetch' via MultiUpload might come in handy for members (like 'who-ever' above in this thread) seeking to retain back-up copies of their archives. I don't want to drift off topic though.

I will talk as a free user - never paid for an account and will never pay.
Totally bad and unacceptable sites: depositfiles, oron, sharingmatrix, uploaded. Slow speed, big waittimes between downloads or even before first download,- this is their business card.

Hotfile - not bad for downloads (reasonably good speed and 30 minutes between downlaods, not 1-6 hours like oron). But I have tried to upload files there as a free registered user - very bad speed; for example I get ~200-300 kb/s upload speed to Megaupload, Ifile, Mediafire but with Hotfile I have got only 40-60 kbps upload speed, even in ftp mode. Sometimes there are captchas but now, often it is possible to download (maybe when servers are not so loaded) without any captchas.

Fileserve - sometimes gives good speed, but sometimes it is as slow as depositfiles. And it has daily limit as for example oron.

Oron - very bad, if there is a need for download of many files. Slow speed, big waittimes between downloads, captchas (no chance to download automatically), and, even download fails, they count megabytes as downloaded file. Imagine you are trying to download 800 MB file - then you can rest for a long, long time...

Multiuploading sites. I have tried several of them while posting to one small forum. At this time, I liked flameupload.com - I have got speed up to 1mb/s and files are uplaoded to 11-12 sites. The only disadvantage - max 100 MB file size.

Banners, popups etc. I do think most people now use normal browsers with possibility to block certain sites/elements/scripts/popups. For example I haven't noticed problems until users told they were having some time with secured.in popup - I configured this site behaviour from my first visit and do not have any problems. So if some site has some ads/popups it is still possible to find cure from that...

I'd say to stop cash-posters put in (and strictly enforce) a one-thread-rule. You start a thread, you add to it. You don't spam multiple threads. Of course you can have like four threads if each one has a different 'category' of content but I can't create, for instance, 6 concurrent amateur teen video threads.

I do not agree. The only way to stop cash-posters - not let to use sites which are paying for downloads.
There are full internet (blogs/sites/forums) with links on crappy hosters like DF/SM/OR/UL. I really do not want this one to become trashcan as others are - designed for those who post but not for those who wants to download.

It's not that free users are more important. It's just that I want to choose a file hoster that is acceptable for both Premium AND Free users. RS is fine for free users as long as you don't download too many files. And so is Netload btw, which is pretty good for free users. Forgot to mention that one. I had a 3-day Netload Premium Account once, but I wasn't happy about the download speed then, which was about the same as when I downloaded as a free user. Based on that experience it's not a good option for Premium users. But maybe it has changed since then.
And I mostly use torrents to download big files.. Smile

Netload is the file host I've used the most as a free user to download porn. But I'm not considering Netload for hosting my files. Like I said, the only file hosts I'm thinking about right now are Filesonic aka Sharingmatrix and Hotfile. If MU would allow porn that one would probably be my first choice..

Um... If MU stands for MegaUpload, they've allowed porn for like.. years. I've been using MU for the past year in my upload posts.

You extend Hotfile Premium accounts with accrued earnings - $55 gets you 12 months, $35 gets you 6, .... $3 gets you a day.

If you earn more than you can spend at Hotfile, you can get the cash transferred to your Paypal account to spend on SM & ORON Premium accounts. Much easier than converting RS points to RS Premium accounts and flogging them on Ebay Cool.

If you're really wicked you can use the money to buy food & pay the rent, or buy the baby goats some shoes Wink You can even send it to Niger where people are dying of hunger - I'm sure they'd prefer $100 to 100,000,000 points from RS or SM Sad

The going price for a 1 year RS Premium acct on Ebay has been about $50-$60 - what a coincidence - they're probably "ten a penny" now.

Yes, MU stands for MegaUpload. And no, porn is not allowed there. It explicitly says so in their FAQ.

True, but as far as I know Hotfile hasn't been allowed here because you can only make money there. Sharingmatrix offers the option to exchange points for a Premium account. I've used Sharingmatrix for a very small number of files on other forums just to try and it looks like the money you earn there from downloads is separate from the points you earn to exchange for a Premium account. But I haven't made nearly enough points to get a Premium account with those few files, so I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hmm im not sure anyone else is having the problem, but when i signed up for sharingmatrix, it gave me a pass etc.. but i havent been able to login for 2 days, as it just tells me its the wrong password or username. So frustrating, but personally i do like MU. The only thing is, its always tempting to lean toward a site that offers cash or easy prems.

I have no problems logging in at Sharingmatrix. Have you tried "Forgot Password?" and have your pass sent to your email address? If you still can't log in contact support. They're not the fastest in replying, but they do reply (something I can't say about Hotfile support, btw).

Oh, and we forgot - problem about link protectors.
Most of those permitted here are completely useless (like rsmonkey or protectlinks.com) - link killers have automatical decrypting software, I am almost sure about this.
Also - link shorteners - tr.im is closed.

As an uploader I would prefer Hotfile, Depositfiles or Netload. Both from my home-computer and from my OVH-server I get very good upload-speeds to them. (from OVH to Hotfile I can upload a 400 MB file in about 45 seconds). And all three are also very good when it comes to deletions - ie they are very slow to delete. That is also why I won't be using Megaupload - slowish uploads, no FTP and they delete almost as fast as Rapidshare.

As a premium-user Netload is the best of those three, I can max out my connection at all times of the day. Depositfiles is also quite fast but not on the level of Netload. Hotfile is fast at certain times of the day but sometimes I only get like 3mbit/s. Hotfile and Netload doesn't have any quotas but Depositfiles "only" lets you download 15 GB a day. That may also be something to look at, the "no limits" on many filehosters is really bullshit, there's no such thing as free bandwith, so it may be that they cap your speed if you download too much or at certain times of the day. (which I think is what Hotfile is doing).

As a free-user Depositfiles is mostly useless - the "no download-slots for your country" is a familiar sight to any who uses Depositfiles as a free user. Hotfile is quite a bit better, not all that fast but you can get the files after a bit of waiting. Netload is the best of the three, with almost no waiting and the fastests speed i have seen for a free-user.

So if it's a important that free-users can get the uploads, then I would recommend Hotfile or Netload. Maybe Depositfiles could be approved with the caveat that you have to provide a mirror for free-users.
