I've been looking around the web trying to see if any reason has been given for the headbutt. From what I've heard, an Italian lip-reader has said that Materazzi told Zidane that he wished an ugly death on him and his family. He also told him to go fuck himself. This seems like the most plausible reason so far because it came from a lip-reader but other sources have claimed that Materazzi called his mother "an Algerian whore", or that he called Zidane "a dirty terrorist".

I've also heard that Zidane's mother was ill and had to be admitted to hospital on the day of the final. Zidane was probably still in pain because of the blow he took to his shoulder, then Materazzi pinched him on the chest, then he made the remark about his family, then he told him to go fuck himself. That's probably why he exploded. I'm disappointed in Zidane, he should have smashed Materazzi's face in. It would have been 10 vs 10 then.

Zidane will reveal all later this week and then all the speculation will end.

The Italians knew Zidane was a great penalty shooter. Maby Materazzi provoked him on purpose. Who knows?

Zidane is one of the greatest footballers that has ever walked this planet. Only Pele and Maradona can compare to him.
