The use of code boxes was originally "devised" to protect the venue by preventing it's address being sent to host servers as referrer. It did this by **** the user to copy/paste the url from the code box into the browsers url field and hitting enter. Any protection to files was coincidental.

However the advent of browser gadgets like Text Link, Linkification etc, makes code boxes useless as board or link protectors. I can click on the following and get there, and the FO address will land on the MS server as the referrer.

If the board wants to prevent its address being sent as referrer then it should interpose dereferrer agents (that don't hide the link from the user) between itself and the outside world.

Dereferrer agents are NOT link protectors. There's no reason why they can't dereference a link to services such as secured.in or Crypt.it

Well we don't know for sure but with my long experience of the forum and dealing with GS in the past years, it's what could be called a well educated assumption.

Internet postings are the first place in human history where people can speak an opinion and not have other people half-listen, half-filter that opinion using preconceptions about the speaker (race, nationality, etc.) because none of that other "information" is available in a post by a username, only the idea itself. So it is a real tragedy when voices are silenced because their words run counter to the agenda of someone with the power to silence them (other boards which shall remain nameless, China, etc.). Ok total newb with only a few posts but can someone explain why only 3 file hosts!
Surely there must be half a dozen "good" file hosts wouldn't that mean more choice for uploaders and downloaders
Ok you wouldn't want to subscribe to all of them but with variety, less chance of the "your free D/L limit has been reached" msg
Most of us live in free market economies where the consumer normally has the choice to pick what service he wants
These restrictions have only resulted in mass cries of "i'm outta here"
Virtually every business/economy worldwide works on the principle of more customers consuming more is the goal
This move just seems counterintuitive

Believe me, 3 is a luxury compared to the prospect of what we faced a few days ago! I think it's safe to say there is financial reasons why Forumophilia are trying to coax people into using Oron, and the fewer hosts to choose from, the more likely people are to use it. Fortunately, with MU and RS, there are a couple of alternatives though.
