I should visit this thread a lot more often. Even though I'm mighty deaf now I have a CD collection of probably around 1,000 and the vinyl numbered far more than that before I parted with most of them.

Some of these songs I know or know when tha answers are given and some I have no clue on. Maybe I should work up a set of lyrics from my collection, perhaps dealing with the tried and true themes of intoxication or death.

Although I've never been to Amsterdam (Belgium was the closest I got), it and the other not too far away were popular ports of calls for submarines like the one I was on not so much for the red light festivities available but more so for the consumables that could be aquired and brought back (often with the intent of reselling but the buyer usually became his own best customer). There was a time when the seas were truely high even if you were far below them.

I thought if I typed for a few minutes a couple of Jeff's new almost familiar sounding lyrics would come to me but no such luck.

Time for another set!!

Duuuuude. AmDam is like the mythical babylon to those of us on this side of the pond that haven't been there and that yearn for easy and legal access to mother's finest (among other things). Don't go burstin' our bubbles! Laughing

Another set? No way! While you were postin' that set I was gatherin' another one, wow. Guess I'll have to wait. Sad And mine was timely, celebrating July 1 too. Stay tuned.

Awesome! Totally Awesome! Cool I'll try (poorly) to play clean-up to your tasty set there Mr. Spicoli, let's see who gets what in the meantime.

And meanwhile, welcome to the thread AKAbob. Very Happy Tell me, kind sir, have you graced our fine forum before with your presence (under a different nick)? I've seen some of your posts, and you sound pretty knowledgable and dang familiar. Or maybe we've met in some other forum somewhere, eh. Wink Anyway, good snag on #2, though there might be multiple answers for that'n, and good on #3 as well. But you might want to check the number of your other answer there. Laughing Laughing

And welcome Mr. Cleotus -- Otis! My Man! Cool Yikes, Animal House reference. Embarassed We usually do a set (2 songs, 5, 10, 8, whatever), guess 'em without googling until they're all gone or the original poster closes it out, and then posting the next set is fair game for whoever wants to. The trick is to make them not too easy and not too hard, of course. Rolling Eyes

So what now? Question

Lemme tell you what now. I'm gonna call up a coupla hard pipe-hittin' niggas to go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', Hillbilly Boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight, I'm gonna get medieval on your ass......

Shocked

Change #4 to #5
My computer was doing something it wanted to do at the time, so I didn't check my response thoroughly before I posted to make sure I had the right numbers. This forum mechanism is different from those to which I am accustomed. I didn't open a quote, so looking at previous posts was challenging.
ramblin'man wrote:

I never heard of most of them. I thought I had a clue on the first one, but I googled to see if I was right, and I wasn't.

Yep, what he said. Very Happy Ahhh, Mr. Spicoli knows how I feel about my fowl-weather friends. Funky funky funky. Laughing

Good gets gnaughty Billy. Looks like I better chime in a claim a couple before the sale runs out! Shocked I have no earthly clue on #8 though. Sad

1. Loverboy - Billy Ocean. Embarassed Embarassed can't believe I know this, but hell I did see him at Live Aid

4. Universal Soldier - Buffy Saint Marie. Wonderful Canadian folk singer/songwriter from the early 1960s. I think Donovan made the song more famous though. Very controversial song I reckon, as most anti-war songs blame the people who GIVE the orders and not the actual soldiers themselves. Me, I think there's plenty of blame to go around for both, but we all know I'm a peace-weenie. Razz

ConscientiousObjectin'Man

p.s. last line says it all! Twisted Evil

Universal Soldier
He's 5 foot 2 and he's 6 feet 4
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17.
He's been a soldier for a thousand years

He's a catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jain
A Buddhist, and a Baptist and Jew.
And he knows he shouldn't kill
And he knows he always will kill
You'll for me my friend and me for you

And He's fighting for Canada.
He's fighting for France.
He's fighting for the USA.
And he's fighting for the Russians.
And he's fighting for Japan
And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.

And He's fighting for democracy,
He's fighting for the reds
He says it's for the peace of all.
He's the one, who must decide,
who's to live and who's to die.
And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,
how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body
as a weapon of the war.
And without him all this killing can't go on

He's the universal soldier
And he really is the blame
His orders comes from
far away no more.

They come from him.
And you and me.
And brothers can't you see.
This is not the way we put an end to war

Heh, googled #8, and not surprised that I didn't know it. Not exactly my thang. Shocked

Regarding Buffy -- one of those "gee what an interesting story" personages. Search on her if you want, e.g. Wikipedia, its a good read. She was a Native American born in Canada (Native Canadian??), way out there in Saskatchewan -- you know, if you're driving from Toronto to Calgary, it goes Ontario, ManiTOba, Saskatchewan, Alberta. Very Happy Has like maybe 12 people in it. Laughing O, Canada.

Anyway she grew up in the US with Native American adoptive parents. Its your typical American story ... went to UMass for a Teaching degree as well as Oriental Philosophy, got a Ph.D in Fine Arts, married a surfing instructor followed by 2 other guys, lives in Hawaii, has 3 other honorary doctorates, spent years teaching, blah blah blah. Rolling Eyes Laughing Did lots of folk stuff in the early 1960s, especially in New York (Greenwich Village, of course), and hung out with some people who are a bit famous ... Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, those kinds of folks. Ended up writing songs that others made famous. White Man stealing from the Native Americans again. Wink

I ran across her thanks to an Indigo Girls song they did on a live album -- Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee -- which Buffy wrote in the early 90s. RM loves his chick-rock, yes he does. Song deals partly with one of the true major tragedies of the mid-1970s American Justice system, and I'm talking about Leonard Peltier of course. Evil or Very Mad He's been in prison here in Pennsylvania for over 30 years now and has never had a truely fair trial.

But that's another rant for another day. Cool Sorry. Embarassed

Good set dude. Hope someone gets #8 soon, as my Canadian set lies waiting.

Hey what happened to that Donovan album cover which you had there? Laughing You are SO busted amigo! Laughing Laughing No worries, it was a tough one which I happened to know because of a freak thing (and I am a freak thing), and as I mentioned, Donovan made it a lot more famous.

NEXT SET

I compiled this last Tuesday, July 1 -- aka Canada Day. Yes, there actually is something called Canada Day. Celebrates their, uhhh, independence or something. Laughing Anyway I saw it as an excuse to schlep together another set with a theme. Actually I think I've done "Canada" before, and while there may be some repeat artists, hopefully there will be no repeat songs. Embarassed

All artists/bands are Canadian. Please limit initial responses to no more than aboot 2 or 3 answers, okay? Some are very famous and easy, and some are ... not. Celebrate Canada! Some of our best members are Canadian ... older members like the Venerable Elmo, and Ubisuck (his latest name escapes me) ... and rumor has it that one of our Admins is actually Canadian too! Exclamation In actuality, however, he's from Acadia and hunts seals in his spare time.

And here's a special WSITF first -- the "Extra Credit" quote below is worth TWO points if you're Canadian, or THREE points if you're not! Wow! Imagine! Extra points! Woohoo! Rolling Eyes

1.
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Cause nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied

2.
I can see her looking fast in her faded jeans
She's a hard loving woman, got me feeling mean
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain

3.
All the pain I thought I knew
All the thoughts lead back to you
Back to what was never said
Back and forth inside my head

4.
I deal in dreamers
And telephone screamers
Lately I wonder what I do it for
If I had my way
I'd just walk through those doors

5.
Drove downtown in the rain, nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stop

6.
And I don't know how I survived those days
Before I held your hand
Well I never thought that I would be the one
To admit that the moon and the sun
Shine so much more brighter when
Seen through two pairs of eyes than
When seen through just one

7.
Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car, shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase

8.
I met a devil woman
She took my heart away
She said I had it coming to me
But I wanted it that way

9.
Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can't see what's round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend

10.
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights
Knock me down, I'm back up again
You're in my blood I'm not a lonely man

11. Extra Credit:
Went back to bed this morning
And as I'm pulling down the blind
Yeah, the sky was dull and hypothetical
And falling one cloud at a time

Well I suck, eh? Only got 2 this time around. Guess my Canadian ancestry would be pretty disappointed with me. Plus, that last one was a real gimme for anyone who has or knows a ch11d under the age of 10, since it was covered on the "Cars" soundtrack, in the event that you had forgotten the original video from the old days on MTV when they actually played videos. I bet there are a lot of k1ds growing up nowadays who don't even know that "MTV" stand for Music TeleVision. More like Mighty Tiresome Viewing these days...

And my masculine side feels the need to explain why I know old Sarah MacLaughlin lyrics. Embarassed Back before she sold out, she was actually a really good artist and quite well regarded on the indie music scene.
