Critical database connexion error

For the last 2 or 3 weeks I often can't reach this forum or can't log in. A text pops up, telling that "the database cannot be connected to"
Browsing on the Internet and looking at other phpBB powered fora, this could mean server overload. The problem seems to get bigger and bigger.

Does anyone has the same problem, and if so, why hasn't it been mentioned more often?

Just a question...

Ive had it for the past 24 hours, now its come good. This is the first time Ive ever had this problem werf so I coulnt mention it before.

I think the admin does know.
What I see is a tremendous growth in postings over the last two months and a server often having troubles when more than 200-250 visitors are logged in. The total load of requests seems to be just too high.

I hope the problem will be fixed soon, but for the time being I'll be cautious uploading too much.

Not sure if im the only one : Sometimes the Page just don´t load! I don´t get any error message! The Browser just say in the lower left Corner : Finish! ANd the Screen is blank!

Ya, I've been getting that also. I think it's just a peak time for traffic when it happens. But, it was only yesterday I had it happen. Now all week long the forum has been slow around supper time here.

Guess that's the price we pay for all this great porn were getting. Like was mentioned earlier this place has exploded in new members over the last cople of months.

Guess we'll have to be patient, but I hate waiting for my porn.

What ws777 said. Axe those who have been inactive, non-VIP, for six months, limit "guests" to General Chat, and cut the non-posters out of the Pic and Video sections. If the leech and lurker traffic make it difficult to get in, I guess the contributors will just have to contribute a bit less.

I've also had problems connecting at times over the last couple of days - cannot connect to server. The file loaded with a blank screen is something I've only experienced with a couple of other places recently.

It's a difficult call with the guests. Some of them will become members and post - I was a guest for a short while before I decided this was an excellent place to join. We've got to give them a chance to see how good it is here. Maybe give them the opportunity to see a selection of threads to allow them to make a decision.

As for the inactive members - they don't contribute to the overload problem but I agree that their membership should be culled. A high number of members means nothing to anyone.

Non-posters, now that's a different thing. I'm sure there are many who just leech from those of us who contribute regularly. I reckon everyone should post at least once a month. The problem is that if someone gets banned they can always re-enrol under a different name. But at least it may deter some from coming back.

I know the above means extra work for the moderators but it's for the benefit of the real members. Maybe there needs to be a membership moderator who is prepared to do the necessary.

I really don't know what php problems have to do with inactive members or guests, that's bullshit!

php boards are capable to handle even more users, that shouldn't have been the problem.

E.g. compare

• the php Forum:
  Our users have posted a total of 1929129 articles
  We have 234696 registered users
  In total there are 239 users online :: 27 Registered, 1 Hidden and 211 Guests
  
  
• to this one here:
  Our users have posted a total of 72358 articles
  We have 23986 registered users
  In total there are 240 users online :: 53 Registered, 10 Hidden and 177 Guests
  

You see:
The amount of online users is nearly identical, but
php Forum has ten times more registered users and even
about 25 times more articles.

Only the admin can tell what the reason really was.
That could have been:
- A board update
- An attack (I can really imagine this forum doesn't only have friends...)
- anything else.

And talking about inactive members I can add a few words:
I'm against a seperation between active and non active accounts.

Why?
This account here is only my second account here (as the name might indicate...). I got much more posts on my first account, but I use my first account strictly only with proxy for security reasons (posting copyr. material....)
But proxy makes browsing really slow, so for 'read only' I prefer to use this account.
So of course I'd like to use this account even when not posting much with this account.

And, more important as I said before:
The number of users is not the problem, you can almost be sure about that...
