Time to stop using rapidshare

Today I spend 2 hours waiting for an open slot on rapidshare, so that I could download a file. I think it's time for the forum to adopt another file host that is really free and doesn't have the wait times for free service.

Free users are fine and they need them also, because they increase the number of users (more user will create more paying members in future), but they can make cash only, if they work profitable.
Therefore they reduce dl speed and created the waiting time to force free users to buy a premium account.

If you don't want to pay, you can create a collector's account, upload a certain number of files and start posting.
Round about 500 files will get you enough points per month to sustain a premium membership alive forever (self-sustaining).

I bought my premium account three years ago and paid for it two times.
First time three months membership when I started and extended it for another month before it expired.
Since then there are enough files stored to keep it alive (10,000 free points per month needed).
And I'm able to dl without waiting time and high speed (average max. 3,800 KB/s; max. limit ISP 4,000 KB/s).

Since this 90-day inactivity rule i have the impression that many posters try to post all their older uploaded stuff, and you can cleary see an increase of posts here at fp. Maybe it's due to that fact that RS is a bit slow in the last weeks

You can't blame people who supply something for free for doing things to encourage people to pay (cough VIP cough). Megaupload seems better than Rapidshare. The countdown until d/l is shorter, there's no wait time between downloads, and I've never encountered that no slots available stuff.

I'm an amatuer around here but having a problem with free seems cheap and almost silly just pay like I did its not that much for all you really get

All file hosts have their issues. But, unlike any other I've seen, Rapidshare is the only one that allows the user to exchange points for extensions on their subscription, as Monkey D. Ruffy explained. That's probably why it will continue to be a popular hosting site and, barring any really stupid changes to their terms, not likely to go away any time soon.

Megaupload is great for lurkers. Is really fast even if you don't have an account. Plus, you don't have to wait more than 30 seconds beteween downloads.

Rapidshare on the other hand is a pain in the ass if you don't have a premium. The obligatory period between downloads, especially when a file has been split onto 6 or 7 smaller archives is very frustrating. You need hours to get a single heavy video.

The 250 limit upload in megaupload is false. Once i tried to upload a 1.5 gb file. I quited 'cause it was taking forever but i'm sure it was possible.

The only problem whit megaupload is, if you want to have a premium account you have to pay. The RS points system allows you to have your ownn premium if you really share.

I started my sharing on februrary, when i joined FP and got my collectors on rapidshare. By august i had my premium on track, but it could it been sooner. Now my premium is valid till 'april 2010 and i'm getting more points everyday. I never paid. As Monkey said, if you share around 500 files is almost for sure your account will become self-sustained.

I've never tried any other filehost site. If anyone knows one with a better system please tell. By the way, i've never seen anyone dl links to the other permitted hosts here:

Rapidshare is still my first choice for DL'ing because the lack of captchas means you can write a bash script to automate downloading. I just add the rapidshare urls to a file and my script chugs through it 24/7.

RS is my host of choice as well, followed very closely by MU.

As stated above, anyone serious about downloading needs to check out JDownloader.

Unattended, JD will manage download tickets, captchas, and wait times for just about any popular file host on the planet: RS, MU, and several others.

The application supports FREE file host accounts, and Premium accounts, with minimal configuration.

Once you complete the initial setup then you simply queue up the files (copy/paste) and walk away. The application supports many other advanced features as well, but I don't want to drift off topic.

Best of all, the application itself is also FREE.

Yet another user of jdownloader here... and a very happy one!
Once properly set up, it simply automates all dwonloads.

I wonder if it is allowed to post RS links encrypted in dlc containers here (jdownloader can handle the encrypting & decrypting) so that the links stay up longer. Any mod please advise...

i agree, rs has gotten way too powerful. it feels it can do anything. megaporn (formerly sexuploader) was always better.
