For what its worth, the dehydration side of things is indeed overstated. many things dehydrate one but don't make you feel like crap - diruetics, excercise, etc. Although it is a factor. Therefore a litre of water before retiring might help, but it might also indicate that you're not so drunk as to get an awful hangover anyhow.

This explains why IV fluids do not cure established hangover symptoms.

Next thing is what you drink. You should restrict your drinking to clear substances such as white wine, vodka, light beers etc rather than port, red wine, whisky, guinness, rum etc. The latter group contain cogeners which cause alcohol to be incompletely metabolised to aldehydes. Aldehyde poisoning is very like a hangover.

Then the idea that one can sleep it off. Again incorrect. Alcoholic gastritis can develope and the quality of sleep is rubbish anyway.

One is best to get out of bed as early as possible and eat a breakfast high in cysteine, like fried eggs. This facilitatess the more complete metabolism of alcohol. Interestingly your liver's supplies of cysteine can be depleted by paracetamol (acetominophen) so this is why some people feel worse after taking panadol. Although aspirin works better, it can cause gastritis and might make you feel sick if you don't take a strong antacid or ulcer medication like rantidine.

In summary chose your poison cautiously, drink two pints of water, set an early alarm, sleep on your side, eat fried eggs and toast for breakfast and if possible get your hands on Ranitidine. Your headache should be livaeble, but if not take two aspirin.

set 3 aspirins and 1 glass of water on your night stand, set your alarm clock for 6 AM, when the alarm goes off take the 3 aspirins with the entire glass of water...

sleep in...

when you wake, go to the market and purchase a large gatorade... begin drinking the gatorade immediately...

when home, shower, soaping your entire body twice...

have a a breakfast of 2-3 eggs, bacon, toast...

nap for 1 hour... then take a walk...

you'll be good as new by 2 PM

drink a water bottle during drinking, and one before bed along with BC powder.... i do that and i dont know what a hangover is anymore

Next time you drink, be preventive. Drink water and/or sports drinks as your drinking alcohol; that will help prevent a hangover in the first place. Also, try to sober up before you go to sleep, that also helps prevent hangovers. If you still get a hangover you should drink plenty of fluids, eat a good, full salty meal - even if you have to force it down, you will feel better afterwards and, this is always a sure thing - smoke some pot, lol
