I use WinRAR. You can download the free trial that last for something like 40 days. If you still don't have the money to buy it, It will work fine.
When you open the main screen it just tells you " If you cannot buy this software please uninstall it from your computer" Yeah Right! I'm so sure
most people uninstall it! Laughing Laughing
It's like all the free copy's of win-zip people have been using for all these years. You open it up and have two options "Please Purchase"
"Continue using Trial". I think I'll just continue with the trial!! Laughing Laughing

I'm sure some more people will come on here and give you some other options. This is just the one I use. Everybody likes a certain one.

Have Fun Cool

I think xpanther is seeking software to allow him to watch a flick and cut out scenes he likes, as well as a program that can do conversion between formats, and he requires a program for joining parts of a scene into one file, along with other such file editing software.

btw xpanther, I sent you a private message.

I am using "total video converter" which can be found here; http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/
the only problem is that unless you purchase it, it leaves a watermark in the top left corner.

Winavi Converter is another good one, I got mine free with the DVD burner I purchased a while ago, but you can find it here; http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm

which gives you a chance to trial it and maybe find a crack.

Hmm, Ok i should have mentioned that winavi converts from, wmv, mpg, avi, dvd and rm to all 5 formats just mentioned. thanks for pointing that out Crafty

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, and may sound a little backwards to go forwards if you know hat I mean, I see sir_darkstar has posted regarding avi to dvd, if you need to convert the other way I was recommended 'flaskmpeg' by svinto, and I have found it well worth it for taking clips from dvd as well as converting whole dvd's. so clips you may wish to join could be converted between both formats. Unless any one knows better. There is of cause win-movie maker that will let you join clips and save as wmv files.

I am using Windows Movie Maker, which came with WinXP. It works, but is a very slow way to achieve this. Perhaps there's just a setting I need to change.

Friends I think I found what was looking for here: http://www.chithai.com/app/sjc/sjc.htm . The software costs $ 25, can be downloaded for a trial but in this way only make half of the work (I mean only join, split or convert half of the files). I going to search for the crack. If any of you know one place for that, please tell me

Deity I have found this very slow too, personally I have no idea why but failing everything else, it does work. or as you say may be there is a setting I've not found either. But I am glad to hear you are sorted xpanther.

The best things are free, my friend.

virtualdub for splitting, joining, etc of .avi files
http://virtualdub.org/

asfbin for splitting, joining, etc of WMV or asf files
http://www.radioactivepages.com/

tmpgenc (basic freeware version) for splitting, joining, etc of MPG files
http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/e_main.html

Now, the good thing about all of these tools (aside from being FREE) is that they are LOSSLESS. ie. they can do a "direct stream copy" of avi, wmv, mpg files respectively.

No need for re-encoding whatsoever and this takes only a few seconds to complete.

But you should go to videohelp.com and read the reviews for yourself.

While we are on the subject of converting movies, joining ect...

I'm sure many of you already know this but for those that don't.
They make DVD players that will play mpeg, avi, divx. That way all you have to do is burn your movie as a data file. Only a few minutes like ripping a CD. Then you can play all this great stuff on your TV also.

Philips makes a good one and I only paid 59$ US. The great thing about this one is it also has a front usb port so you can plug in a external
or mini hard drive in also. I replaced every DVD player in my house with these. Fantastic unit! The higher the movie resolution the better the picture. Most all this stuff on here plays great!

I bought the....Philips DVP 5960 (59$ US)
