Ah, the old Netherlands/Holland debate! To us outsiders it means the same thing but we're lazy and 'Holland' is easier to say and write. But of course to the Dutch there is a difference, Holland is part of the Netherlands. You'll have to forgive the ignorance of many.
Nice lot of pics R0m30, a few familiar sights to me
I know what you mean Hein about A'dam being crowded compared to Utrecht and surrounding areas. I stayed in the centre for a couple of months but prefer the smaller towns - I have a friend living about 15km south east of U, much better there.
Some info on comparative USA/Dutch prices which I have got from my friend (better known as Horny Rob). He goes to the USA quite a lot - this is what he wrote...
Simple, Gas x3
food in the stores x1.5 to x2
food in restaurants x4
Smoking x2. Only smoking grass will be cheaper
Where you can life in the USA for about $50 a day you will need €100, so $120 in Holland.
A fucking beer and that's not as big as in the USA! is €3! Burgers are about x2. Fastfood allover is about twice as much as in the USA in all cases I count the $ rate too! So hope that helps.
The worst is food outside. Here (in the USA) I can eat very well for about $15 a piece, in Holland that would be € 50, what's $60! Eating here in a really good restaurant would be $25, in Holland €100.
... So basically you better save up your $s unless you plan to live on the weed
