Came across CCCP a while back so have a look. Query Google about the program if you have doubts. It has the option to turn off specific codecs in the menu system, which helps immeasurably with conflicts.

Bear in mind that review is from 2006, but the comments stand in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

Used the XP Codex Pack (the 4 parts posted by Sir DS) and they work great with windows media player 11 as well (in a Windows XP background). After downloading the 11 wmp had problems viewing vids that before worked well in earlier versions, and now all of those vids work well. Many many thanks Very Happy

I would be very careful with codec packs, they can miss up a lot...
I have made bad experiences with different kinds of codecs, audio applications or film editing software etc. may not work properly.

I got some information from a video expert board that you better don't install those codec pacs. Usually everything should run with the standard codecs (divx, xvid, windowsmedia).

If you really find some file that you can't open, then install that specific codec, but not a whole pack.

videolan player is also a good try, doesn't miss up and can play almoast everything.

That's just what my experience has been so far...

Very Happy I use the PC for video editing sometimes, and I fully trust the CCCP codecs pack. The one to watch out for is Quicktime - that willl mess with your system eventually.
No link just look for it Arrow

CCCP Codec pack is always usefull as a cure all, personally for my own encodes I use koepis xvid for my mpeg 4 combined with ac3 for audio. These play alot of content out there aswell. I really dislike realplayer and quicktime so I use real alternative and quicktime alternative combined with Media Player Classic (MPC) for those files.

To find out what codec a file in encoded with I always use GSpot (Great name!) http://***.headbands.com/gspot/

This is the best Vista codec package ever created IMO. Allows you to play real media RM and other formats within windows media player. Also integrates FLV entirely within the OS allowing you to not only play FLV in media player, but the OS will generate thumbnail previews inside folders for FLV like any other media file. Enjoy..
