Why should someone pay 30 bucks, if he/she can get it for free (or at least for a lesser price)?!?

Especially since, as I'm always quick to point out, RS can be damn near free if people would take a little time to upload some decent content. One initial payment, upload some stuff people want, and your account can go on for months, if not years, with free extensions. I don't think I'll ever understand how people knock Rapidshare so hard. Okay - They're not perfect. But damn if it hasn't been great, downloading for nothing for the last year+!

Hell, even the initial payment (I did) isn't necessary, if you upload the stuff on a free collector account, gather some points and either upgrade the whole account to premium or create a new premium with these points.

Announcing the next RapidShare upgrade

February 01, 2010
A lot of our users have noticed that up till now, our system was working on maximum load. We are happy to say that the capacity issues will soon be resolved. Early March, we will start up twelve new 10-gigabit ports, and at the same time add 200 new servers to our system. This upgrade will give more download power to Free Users. Premium Users will get even higher download speeds. We continue to make sure that we offer you the best platform for filehosting in the world.

Let's wait ... Rolling Eyes

Well, that's capitalism to you: Make money with what you have. Make more money with giving less if you can get away with it. Optimum is to get lots of money for nothing...

Can't change that. So: I bought a PS account, as this hoster is the major one with most of the files . Why pay at all? Simple: I do not have a DSL 8000 account for not getting dl speeds above 10 kbps, and full speed links have always been the privilege of premium accounts, regardless on which hoster... And: I am simply too lazy to dis- and reconnect after every leeched part, I just don't want it to take a day to dl a movie if I can get it in 15 minutes... And what did RS do? It enhanced convenience for those like me: larger file sizes, more traffic (ok they cut back on that lately but still...)... and that costs MUCHO, still fees have stayed where they were. "Free" is advertising, and if your product runs smoothly without, why bother? Maybe someday RS will lose customers to their capitalist drives to provide less for more cash, but that is always the sine wave of healthy development. People will then move on, making RS either offer better service to lure them back or dwindle back to where they came, to have the lead taken over by another enterprise. But no one has cash to throw out the window...

As the Germans say, "Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof"...

Rapidshare can only be free if free users download your links. If free users can't access it, then you don't get points. At best, the points you get are going down because of the reduced access to free users Rapidshare has given.

I have been trying for hours to download as a free user and can't get access. I have over 19k points, but those points are not adding up fast enough to trade in every month, or even every other month.

Absolutely wrong. Premium users generate premium points and these points have an even higher value than the free ones. I'm thriving on premium users downloading from my account.

That's a change. It used to be you only got points from free users.

Still, we ban hosts that require registration or subscriptions. We ban hosts that pay uploaders. Rapidshare does both. It's time to unban some of those other hosting sites.

Maybe you should read the news from RS more often.

No registration needed, you can dl as free user (though not many slots for free available at peak time).

RS don't pay (anymore):

Referrer Program discontinued

January 29, 2010
Due to a lack of international response we have decided to end the testing phase of our Referrer Program and to discontinue the program. We would like to thank all of the users who participated in the test. At this point we would like to call your attention to our continuing Rewards Program which allows you to exchange your RapidPoints for attractive rewards.

How can people complain about something that is FREE?

Evidently just by typing the words Wink I don't understand it either - but they do.

It's all about competition. When RS becomes uncompetitive people people that pay money for the service, they will change or die. As long as free users complain, what's the issue?

So is Megaupload inherently problematic for the uploader? Because it seems to be awesome for the (free) downloader. RS is as good as unusable for me, it takes the better half of a day to get a handful split archives together (= 1 video), and i'm not home to queue downloads...

No, it isn't problematic. I have an account there too. But I haven't uploaded that much there.
