I'll probably get death threats from Real Madrid fans for starting this thread but, in my opinion, the current Barcelona side are one of the greatest teams I have seen during my lifetime.

So far, they haven't won as much as the legendary Liverpool and AC Milan sides of the past but they are starting to show the sort of dominance that will see them become a legendary side.

As far as attacking goes, no team in the world can compare to Barca. They have Ronaldinho (World and European footballer of the year), Eto'o (African footballer of the year), Messi (one of the best young players in the world), Deco, Giuli, Larsson, etc. It's almost like watching a dream-team play. The quality of the football takes your breath away.

Next month, they play Chelsea which should be one hell of a match. As brilliant as Chelsea are, I think they'll get blown away by the new and improved Barca.

I always thought the Pittsburgh Steelers were the best football team on the planet.

Oh wait. Never mind. Smile

For some reason, I have this image of 300-pound men in helmets and padding just kicking the shit out of a European football team in short pants and knee socks.

Kind of a funny picture actually. Very Monty-Python-esque.

I find it hard to get into NFL. It's a 1 hour game that seems to take half a day or so to finish Laughing I'm not too certain about the rules but I think that, after every play, the teams take a break, for coffee and doughnuts or something like that, and then they start again if they're not too tired. Absolutely a different game and it's not really fair to try to compare them. To someone who doesn't follow it, American (or Canadian) football is impossible to understand, filled with stoppages and probably appears to be a bunch of grown men rolling on the ground.

Other sports that few people understand:
Cricket
Water Polo
Curling
Aussie Rules Football

At least European Football (soccer) is self-explanatory. Kick ball. Score goal. Get check. Marry Spice Girl.

Eto'o scored an incredible goal in the African Nations Cup yesterday. The ball flew into the back of the net like a bullet from about 20 yards out. It's a shame Cameroon won't be in the World Cup this summer because Samuel Eto'o is in absolutely awesome form!

Even with Eto'o away on international duty, I think Barcelona will still put in a good performance tonight in the Copa del Rey. I predict a 3-0 or 4-0 victory.

LOL
you're absolutely right!

Two additional notes about Italian Soccer:
1. Italian soccer players don't know speak Italian.
2. Only foreign soccer players know speak Italian.
Very Happy

I thought I had given Barcelona the kiss of death by praising them. After I made my last post they lost their winning streak by losing against Atletico Madrid and Real Zaragoza. Yesterday, however, they were back and in brilliant form beating Chelsea 2-1 away from home.

Chelsea couldn't handle the Argentine wonderkid Lionel Messi who wreaked havoc on the Blues' defence all night long. The winning goal came from a lightning counter-attack lead by Ronaldinho and finished off by Samuel Eto'o from a delightful cross by Rafael Marquez.

The second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou is bound to be a humdinger of a football game. It will be a classic. Chelsea have to attack to save the tie but Barca have devastating pace on the counter-attack. Sparks will fly, goals will be scored and the Catalan crowd will go wild. It's going to be special - don't miss it Exclamation

Yes, Barca is a great team, but in all honesty that red-card/call in their match vs Chelsea was a total joke -- and no, I'm not a Chelsea fan -- and yeah, it should have been penalized but with no more than a yellow. Yes, I know, its part of the game, blah blah blah ... every team has players that dive, blah blah blah. Its a shame that it wasn't 11-11 for the full match, would have been a better test for both. Hopefully the match in Spain will be better quality, and will be on here in Mumbai -- hard to get anything more than cricket on my local cable. Mad

Bayern Munich and Juventus might have a say in this "best club team" discussion. Of course I'm a bloody yank and clearly have no idea about world football. Rolling Eyes

SD,

The Penrith Panthers eh? If only Gower could keep off the booze and his hands to himself. Interesting choice though, it was breathtaking to see them blow those crappy Roosters off the field in the GF two years ago. It will always be hard to forget Sattler running down that dickhead winger and smashing him into touch with THAT tackle!

Me, I'm an old Tigers man, but back when they were Balmain. Was nice to see them lift the premiership last year, but it still was the joint venture, and I hated Wests when I was growing up.

I'm with you in the world of soccer, always been a Liverpool supporter, always will be. Nice to see Australia get into the World Cup, but sadly feel we're only there for the experience, as I think we'll get blown out with our first three games.

Anyway, football time is over, back to the girls......... Wink

I think the red-card was justified. Asier del Horno caught Messi twice with bad challenges. The first one, he followed through and caught Messi on the knee with his studs. Then the 2nd challenge was a body-check that would even be penalized in an ice hockey game. So he deserved to go for 2 bad challenges even though he got a straight red.

The irony of course is that Arjen Robben got Liverpool's keeper sent off with a theatrical over-reaction to a touch on his face. So Chelsea aren't really in a position to complain about players over-reacting to challenges.

i agree too that there was a straight bodycheck from del horno which i think was inspired by watching the icehockey at the olypmic games, but it's true as well that it would have been a differerent match if they played 11 versus 11 all along the match.
Anyway, maybe it's some sort of justification from the clash last year when there was this doubtful winning goal from chelsea.
what you guys think would be the result of the return game?
I think 3-3

I think Barcelona will tear them apart at home. Ronaldinho was quiet at Stamford Bridge apart from the run that lead to the Eto'o goal. I think he will come alive at the Camp Nou. With Messi on the right, Ronaldinho on the left and Eto'o through the middle the Chelsea defence will have a difficult time. I predict a Barca victory, 4-0 or 4-1.
