Would someone please help me out.
I have been trying for hours and hours to view and combine video files that end in a number, such as .avi.000, .avi.001, .avi.002, etc.
I have no problem viewing and combining .avi files with my joiner program if the number is BEFORE the .avi, such as .001.avi, .002.avi, .003.avi.

If I try and play a .avi.001 file I get a message that the 001 file extension is not recognized as a media file. I also run into problems if I try and use my file joiner program. Those files do not even show up in the file joiner window
since they are not recognized as media files. I have even tried renaming the file by switching the order of the number and .avi extension, for example, renaming".... lady.avi.001" to "... lady.001.avi". The icon changes to a media symbol but will still not play. Windows media player says "one or more codecs required to play the file can not be found".

What is the function of the very small avi.000 files.

Do I need a special program to handle this? PLEASE ADVISE

Is VLC another type of Video Player. Can VLC convert all the files so that they can play on Windows Media Player.

What is the site address that I can get VLC.

Does this mean that the video files I talked about can ONLY be played on or with VLC?????

THANK YOU

I just found VLC on google and downloaded it. It will only play .avi files ending in a number, such as lady.avi.001, when I rename the file to lady.001.avi. (Switching the order of the .avi and .001) It will only play the first part of the video files; the .001.avi part----it will not play the .002, .003, .004. etc parts.
I still have not figured out the purpose of the avi.000 files.
Can anyone else please provide information on how I can play these video files in question. There must be some way to convert them to play on Windows Media Player.
THANK YOU

I just was informed that the free software joiner/splitter program called HJ SPLIT does the job very well. I just tried it out on several video files and so far is working perfect. No need to rename the files. After you download all of the files you just launch the HJ SPLIT program and then click on the first video file, the .avi.001 file, and the program automatically finds the rest of the parts and joins them for you. This joined file can be played on any media video player like Windows Media Player.
I hope this has helped out other people like myself that has been in the dark about avi files ending in a number.

You can download this totally FREE program at: http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit
Just download the basic HJ SPLIT 2.2 version
I ran a virus scan and spyware/adware scan and this file is SAFE!
ENJOY!

Exactly right dennisa6, we have a thread around here somewhere that explains all that. Still some folk have a hard time understanding file splitters like HJ and RAR, But the gist is, you have to have all the parts, and whatever program split the files in the first place... Happy viewing!

get HJSplit
load the first part (.001)
the other parts should be in the same dir
then join them and you'll have the whole file in one

for Mac OS X users there's a program called JigSaw that will join the files. It has a shareware nag, and always tells me it's missing files when I know I have them all, but it works perfectly otherwise.

Ok. now I have ASF and HJ split downloaded. The ASF won't drag and drop
anything into the bottom window, and neither one appears to recognize RAR files. But I apparently can't extract the second part of a 2 part movie without utilizing one of these programs. I read the part about making sure all the files have the same extension, but does that apply to RAR files or the new folders. So which is it, extract from rar and then join, or join while still in rar files? I wouldn't care in the least except I would really like to see the second part of this max clip.
I will be grateful for any advice.

Hey dhondhonus, if the files end in a .rar or .001, you must DL all the files to make the full vid, into the same folder.

If the file ends in .rar, use Winrar to unzip it.

If the file ends in .001, use HJSplit to join the file. Just find the .001 file in the Input File.

If the above doesn't work then you're either missing a piece of a vid or a piece is corrupt.

See MM's thread for the software, it's here somewhere.Or do a search they are free.
