Can you use two anti-virus programs at the same time and does this give double the protection or does it stop each other working?

I am thinking about using avast in addition to Norton. Thanks.

Not a good idea to use two anti-virus programs at the same time.

They will interfere each other and maybe both become useless or at least less efficient.

You can use one firewall (the windows one, or another program e.g. Zone Alarm), one anti virus program and one anti-adware program at the same time without any problems.

Some anti-adware programs can be used simultaneously though.

Thanks for the reply. I wondered that about using 2, but I am wondering about using avast on its own when my norton subscription expires.

Can anyone recommend using Avast on its own. It has good reviews, but as it is free I wonder.

Good luck getting Norton off - I found it left so much rubbish, and slogged the PC so bad I never want to use it again.
Worse than AOL to remove.

I'll recommend it. Very Happy I've been using it for years now.
There is a pop-up every day when it updates its virus library.
And you will have to renew your registration once a year.
For that you get a good and free anti-virus program.
I like the deal.

I have been using Avast! for years now also. Used to have Norton, but it sucked in general and was a resource hog. If you can afford to donate to Awill for their product, Avast! is excellent. If you can't afford to, it's free. It updates multiple times per day, doesn't chew up CPU and stops everything I've come across. The boot time scan is an excellent feature and you can scan files with a right click. Highly recommended.

Firefox + NoScript + AdBlock Plus + Avast! + ZoneAlarm firewall = happy surfing.

Just found two excellent Anti Spyware programs last week while removing the PAV virus from my buddy's computer: MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware. He was using Norton and IE.

If you're using Windows XP, I also recommend WinPatrol and Spyware Blaster to run in the background. WinPatrol is very good strong utility.

Use a good uninstaller when you are taking norton out your pc cos the windows uninstaller is garbage. Try revo uninstaller, its free and very good. Same people that make ccleaner i think. Personally i think you should pick up a version of nod32. its excellent. And never use IE of course..

Its more important to combine your antivirus-software with brain.exe.
Thats the best protection.

but brain.exe freezes a lot these days, then takes ages to reboot Smile Don't know where you get an upgrade from.
