If i understood you right, you cannot access the folder you want within the opening input-file mask. Maybe it's a roblem with access-rights. Have you installed the HJSplit file under your account? Maybe try installing it again.
When you open HJSplit and the join-dialog and select "input file", which drive letter and folder do you see? If there's nothing preselected then something is wrong with the *ini settings of HJSplit, cause it should be the drive that you used the last time. If you can see for example "D:", try copying the files to the drive and folder you can access and not try opening the folder the files are.
Another idea: Open the windows explorer and look for your .001-files, then open HJSplit and make sure that the windows explorer is visible in the background and move the hjSplit windows so that you can see the 001-file, click "Join" and repeat the action (move the windows that you can see the 001-file) and then "input file" and if necessary, move it too.
You should now see the windows explorer in the background and you should see your 001-file and you should see the HJSplit-window "Select the first input file". Then click on your 001-file and keep the mouse buton down and move the file into "Select the first input file"-window.
This should work as a copy-function and the 001-file should appear now in your HJSplit window. Just to make sure everything is ok with the installation of HJSplit. Don't forget only the first (001) file is copied, so don't continue with this operation.
And if you don't come nearer to a solution you can also try to install 7Zip-filemanager or WinAce-Archiver. They can also handle these types of files
