I am just curious why some forums demand that you use them for the DL links.
Why is there such a bother with it. The hassle of copy paste. Why not the hot link...?
I know I should know the answere to this, but I dont.. thanks

see ya soon..

Hi Cruzing.

Pretty simple.

They ban hotlinking cause of the referrer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referer

Same here:

Wikipedia will know where this link was posted (edit: If you're using Firefox, you can disable this function).

If you post a rapidshare hotlink here, it's pretty simple for rapidshare to identify this link as porn (you came from PORN Forumophilia).

That's the reason why I code all hotlinks to paysites, if someone post a request about a girl or video.

If the webmaster of the paysite reads the protocols he can follow the trace back to Forumophilia. And will be angry, maybe he will insistent that his stuff will be added to the restricted site list.

That's it.

Me too, put links in code when spotted.
I also then add this explanation.

Avoid hotlinking to sites, please.
Put links in code brackets instead, for copy and paste.
If a lot of clicks comes from here we are like a sitting duck to the webmasters and they will come here and complain about the posting.
Forceing us to put the site on the restricted list.

Perhaps this should be in the rules?
The problem is, if you post just http://blahdeblahdeblah.com/blah.blah then you get the hotlink automatically:
http://blahdeblahdeblah.com/blah.blah
Is it possible to prevent this without having to remember to use
[code]http://blahdeblahdeblah.com/blah.blah[/code] to generate:
Code:
http://blahdeblahdeblah.com/blah.blah

I didn't know about referrer information until you pointed it out...

And Cruzing, I think they mean RS links should not be hotlinked, if they are from your RS account or not...
If I am right (please correct me if I'm not) when you click on a hotlink to an RS file, RS get the referrer information "www.forumophilia..." as the link source. They can then tell that the file is porn (and thus may be in violation of copyright) and force this forum onto the restricted sites list. If you copy the link and paste it into the address bar, there is no referrer information, so less risk to the site.

You guys are assuming too much

I highly doubt that any Rapidshare staff ever go to the trouble of sifting through referer logs.

Rapidshare has repeatedly stated that it does not and will not share access logs, specifically IP addresses, with copyright owners (to this time there's been nothing that suggests otherwise), and I'm pretty sure that referer information is included in that lot, too.

A file is deleted if it is reported, and only then. That's all.

I don't know if it's possible here to forbid hotlinking completely. I don't know if the board's software allows such changes (it may work on other boards, but here?!?).

Exactly.
And no need of copyright infringement.
Your homemade private porn isn't allowed to be hosted on RS either, see TOS: No pornographic material allowed.

I'm sure you are right, but I take Monkey D. Ruffy's point - why take the chance, particularly when some of the permitted download sites are not based in Switzerland and thus subject to real world law?
