Can anyone give a good description/translation for the word "coed"?
It started as "co-educational" referring to schools, usually
post-secondary, that accepted students of both sexes. It
dates back to a time when many formerly unisex colleges
and universities converted to accepting both sexes, for
various reasons. From there it diverged to two meanings:
Most of the institutions that "went coed" were formerly all-male
colleges that began accepting women (there were some that
went the other way.) So most of the new "coed" students
were female, and "coed" came to mean a female college
student.
It also refers to a facility that caters to both men and
women, e.g. a coed hair salon. In this sense, it's opposite
to unisex (logic suggest that should be bisex, but bisexual
was apparently already taken, and logic has little to do
with English anyway.) It often refers to sports, e.g. a
coed baseball league.
In the WWW age, it's taken on a third meaning, refering to
a skanky ho in her late twenties with fake tits and lots of
tattoos and an IQ in the single digits who's never been
near an institution of higher learning, but please, really
we want you to believe she's 18-22 and working on a
degree in particle physics, which half you sad sacks will believe
because you're not much smarter and you've never been
to a college either and you don't know what it's like and
you do all your thinking in your pants anyway...
I read it on the internet, it must be true...
