Backward compatability.

Early stuff didn't use a timer as they didn't come often enough; as a result on faster machines some of the software was unusable.
Other way round now, you can't play the latest games on your PC because it's too slow - you must have had that at least a week, mate!

Yeah, I know what you mean - I had to stop playing a pacman game cause the ghosts were on speed. "Start...erk...Game over"

First computer I had was a hand me down from my older brother to my cus and then on to me... sinclair spectrum 48K... it was well dated when I received it aropund 1990... then I got from santa Laughing a commodore 64...just played games on it like all the otuer k_1dz (1991

Then super nintendo came along... it ruined my computer ways, nintendo 64, playstation, nintendo gamecube and playstation 2 then followed.

It wasn't until April 2001 that I got my first dell and then the interwebs took over and eventually here I am!

I had a Didaktik M. It had no HD, but I had a floppy drive, instead of a casette player. The sheer capitalistic decadency of it!
And my first real pc had a monumental 3 GB of HD. It shold have been 5 GB but Ive got mugged...

No downloading, no chat rooms, no java nothing couldn't even print....

Ha, me too, I did find a compatable printer for it though. It definitely had it's limits, but no worries of viruses or crashes was a plus. The built in newsreader was the best though, opened up a whole new world of porn surfing Very Happy

They changed the name to MSN TV several years ago. When I was able to get DSL I got a real computer because the WebTV was so slow and some web pages just wouldn't load. About that time they came out with MSN TV2 which is capable of broadbrand connection and is still on the market (just did a quick google out of curiousity). Unfortunately I believe they dropped the free newsreader which was popular with the porn hounds Sad

first computer I ever owned was an IBM 386 -- with the annoying IBM micro-architecture that prohibited one from buying any additional upgrades unless they were also made by IBM.

Don't recall all the details of the machine any more, but it was out near the leading edge at the time...

Now the first computers I used where older than this, but I didn't own them, and thread asked what was first you ever had...

Nobody else had a Heuristic Algorithm 9000?

First computer I remember was the Apple IIE in grade school and writing idiotic choose-your-own-adventure style games in Basic. Embarassed

First home computer was a Gateway in the early 90's.

Side note: the mention of gaming consoles pisses me off even almost 2 decades later. I saved up money for months to buy myself the Atari 3600/7800 (top of the line at the time). Then the first Nintendo came out a few months later. Argh. On the other hand, I never got sucked into the world of computer games like the rest of my generation (you just coudn't play Atari all day). Plus, I can still hook that old sucker up and play a few games of Joust or Xevious, or play Larry vs. Dr. J in One on One. Smile
