The problem with lurking is you don't get the 'last read' stats... and for a forum with this many unnamed threads [Bob's Not guys.... Zwergi's Spamalot [kidding Z...]], seriously though without last read I'd go nutz chasing through all the mega threads.

I've been lurking for a while now, mainly because I'm lazy when it comes to creating accounts. But I thought after reading this thread I may aswell join and become and active part of the community.

Don't think I've ever joined a board with thoughts of being liked or respected. I wouldn't say I'm a lurker, but wouldn't say I'm a contributor either. Guess I'm stuck in the middle, I contribute when I can, but never post random things just to build up my count. I ALWAYS thank and leave a response for something I download, having 813 active RS links, I know what it's like to post with no thanks. Years ago (on another board) I uploaded a file that had over 15,000 downloads with one reply which was "rapidshare sux".

I think it should be mandatory for a certain period of lurking just so you get a sense of the board and what it has and what the conventions are. This is especially true of a big board like this.

Im guilty as charged (though no one charged me), iam a lurker and not proud of it nor ashamed lol or indifferent. i really would like to contribute but neither having much time, $$$ or CC i cant get content to upload and i know its frowned upon to repost stuff and seeing as this is the only board i use, then anything i would post would be a repeat. id like to post stuff not for recognition, thanks or to fit in, id just like to do my part lol (and see whats in the VIP section)

The above definition of lurking is only true if it is a given that contributing to the community reservoir of content is the only way to participate in the community. Kind of like presuming that the only way to contribute to the real world society is to be a doctor, or an actor, and any other profession is damaging to society. This is at best unfair to the members of the community that don't have the skill, talent, or inclination to restrict themselves to those professions. It is equally unfair in an online community like this one, where many members don't have the opportunity, money, or computer resources to acquire content, and upload it here.

A true lurker would have little or no posts, but his participation in the forum wouldn't be damaging to the community here. Lurking is nothing more than not letting one's presence to be felt unless one believes one has something important to contribute. I don't post much, and it's all text, but I've never done anything to harm this forum, or the other posters here. The presumption in the OP's description of a lurker is inappropriate, and I am offended by it. I'm also certain that anyone like me is offended as well.

was a lurker until today, inspired to sign up last week and to post this morning ! hello out there everybody

I was a lurker for a couple of weeks but then decided to sign up because I wanted to be a part of some discussions.
