This is the news posted on Rapidshare's website:

Fit for the future

October 23, 2008
Really it should state here that we increase the prices. A few weeks ago, we have extended our capacities by 50 Percent, enabling you to download files at highest speed. Your satisfaction is our number one priority. While other webhosting services literally leave you stuck in congested networks, we don’t shy away from any cost and effort, providing fastest servers and connections.

It is not just "RAPID" that is important to us, "EASY" is of the same significance for us. For weeks have been contemplating and discussing, how we can balance pricing for our frequent- and less regular users, without getting into a profuse and complex pricing structure. At the same time we want to avoid that our less regular users are financing our frequent users, which would be the case with a general price increase. Though it is us that has to compensate for hardware and internet access. For this reason we have chosen a solution that is fair for all: In the future, the download volumes included in a Premium Account is going to be reduced from 10 Gigabyte a day to 80 Gigabyte a month, at continuous exact daily pro rata billing. The sum of accumulated download-traffic is going to be reduced from 50 Gigabyte to 10 Gigabyte. Personal web storage space is going to continue to be set to 500 Gigabyte. The changes only apply to new Premium Account and extension. Running Accounts are not affected.

Prices for TrafficShare-packages have been reduced considerably. You can apply these to your own downloads with immediate effect. If you download a file and your download quota is exhausted, the system automatically allocates 1 Gigabyte of the TrafficShare quota for download traffic. As long as you hold a TrafficShare balance, no error message will appear. The advantage for less regular users is that the prices are not going to be increased. The advantage for more frequent users is that by any desired increase in TrafficShare balance, maximum download volume is no longer dictated. By this we also hope to increase the interest in our TrafficShare model. For all existing Premium Accounts the old conditions are in place (10 Gigabyte download per day), however, you can already make use and profit of the new TrafficShare model.

It is not the price model only that we have shaped up for the future. A further change is going to effect a small number of users that neither upload their files through a Premium- or Collector’s Account. Files that are stored completely anonymous can now only be downloaded 10 times. Thereafter an error message will appear. However, the file can be moved into a Collector’s- or Premium Account afterwards so that downloading is possible again.

Lastly we have a thorough positive announcement: With immediate effect the FileMigrator has been made available, enabling you to move any files between Accounts, namely with the following combinations: From Collector's to Collector's, from Collector's to Premium, from Premium to Collector's, from Premium to Premium. LinkLists can be transferred from Premium- to Premium Account. More information is available in the Collector's-Zone, and respectively in the Premium Zone.

So from allowing the user to download 300 GB a month (for a 30 day month) you are now allowed to download 80 GB - and thats for the same price !!! Evil or Very Mad
That really means that they have hiked their prices by 275% - well they can kiss my hairy a** ! Twisted Evil

I don't download anything from Rapidshare - but I DO post a lot of stuff there which gets them a lot of traffic and presumably also some premium accounts are sold because of that. (over the past 3 weeks I got some 25000 rapidpoints and about 35000 downloads on the files i've posted)

Well i'm not gonna help them screw people over like that - so from now on i'm gonna post my stuff on Megaupload - maybe not the best site but at least there are no 275% price hikes !

You have to love this bit, too:

In other words, buy an account, or pretty much no one will be able to download your stuff. Sad
Maybe they should re-christen themselves RapidBankrupt, because that's what they're going to be very soon.

I had such a topic title in mind Sad

Reducing alloted traffic for paying members from 10GB to 2.66GB a day! Why? I remember not too long the increased from 5GB to 10GB...

They say they're doing this to be fair to less frequent users... So why don't they set lower rates for less frequent users and keep everything the same??

They say "the changes only apply to new Premium Account and extension", this does not bode well, even if you're a long-time paying member you'll have to extend one day, does that mean you'll eventually be getting less for the same price? Sad

Not really, you can yet upload to a (free) Collector's Account
(any serious uploader has a Collector's Account anyway)

Well it's as bad as I thought, you can now convert your trafficshare-GB's to "normal" download GB's so you have more than the given 80 GB. But that means that to go from the 85 Gb you now have to the 300 GB you had under the old accounts you have to buy 215 GB on the side, and behold you can do just that (smart bastards Evil or Very Mad ). So the price for Rapidshare has just gone from 7€ to about 29€ - an overnight increase of 22 €. And as most of the files hosted on Rapidshare are pirated (and don't tell me they don't know that) I would call that profiting from pirating.
It really is my opinion that the admins/mods should ban the use of Rapidshare cause they have really crossed the line this time.

What's the alternative? If the files are uploaded to several filehosters, you have to have a premium account for each of them, whats more expensive in the end. The best thing would be, if the files wouldn't be dipersed, but the whole ddl scene would have to agree on one filehoster, but which one?

After the fireworks there will be an offer of a 'heavy user' account.. there always is, and i have no problem paying a bit extra [I do on my ISP, $25/month surcharge for being a leech whore....] but I always go with the unlimited aspect. I won't pay extra for a small amount, and there are always ways around it. There are other download entities available and RS may open the door for one of them to expand.

Seems like they really don't know how to run a business. Changing the rules on your customers constantly is a quick way to lose all your business.

In addition to reducing the download volume to monthly 80GB the "bucket" size will be reduced to 10GB. So if you don't download anything for 4 days... you'll already be wasting some of your precious 80GB! Shocked

Hi,

we in brazil are also pissed. RS will loose their leadership in the market and so other services will have new customers.

But did i understand it right? Owner of old accounts will keep the 10Gb/day and 50Gb/ week? The new rules are for new contracts/customers?

Yes owners of old accounts will keep the 10 GB/day but only until it runs out - so you can not extend it and keep the 10GB/day.

When you log in to premium-zone you can see how many days are left until you go from 10GB/day to 2.6GB/day.

yeah i got fairly lucky buying for the full year when i did:

"You are going to continue to be credited with 10 GB download traffic per day, until 14.04.2009. It is 170 days remaining."

and i'm on the basis of 10,000 points per month right now so it looks like money wise none of this will affect me, except for the download restrictions, shitty situation but they have been changing there regulations consistently ever 2 to 3 months some for the good and some for the bad, so you never know, they might realize there mistake after 2 - 3 months of bitching and then they'll come out with the message, "well we do appreciate your business and as an added bonus to our long time premium members here's this, this, and this", only time will tell.

rapidshare is not really fair to their users.
for people who can't or do not want to afford a premium account, there is some nice shell script. i contributed to that Cool
this little piece of software downloads stuff from a rapidshare url (or a list of urls) without requiring you to sit in front of the computer and click somewhere. all it needs is some time (e.g. over night) but _NO_ premium account.
for the people here who only use windows (i guess this is the majority) i think you should be able to run that with either cygwin and/or microsoft services for unix for windows xp or Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) for windows vista users.
somebody with windows programming skills could also make something like a GUI just in case somebody is scared of a command-line.

comments welcome.
enjoy!

Is this PER ACCOUNT? What if I have more than 1 or 2 (which I do)? Or will it be going by your IP?

This really sucks, but I still like and will continue to use, mainly because I have more than 1 account, and several months left on all of them.
