Hello,
What am I missing as far as codecs etc. that prevents some videos from playing? Can anyone help fix this or is there one?
Thanks

You don't say what error you get - if any, but since you mention codecs I'll assume thats what you need. Try dead link and see if that helps. If not, let us know more information if you can!

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I have Vista Ultimate and Quick Time too.
Thanks

OK, it's a codec you need. If the previous post didn't help, either google for "codec" and try one of the packs - KLite or DivX. I assume this is an AVI file, in which case it can contain DivX (in loads of flavours) or XVid - there is no way of telling without something like VideoInspector ( http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb )

Or try viewing it in something else:

dead link

If this doesn't help, let us know. Good luck!

I agree, VLC is the player to have... if this program can't unlock your file, than delete the video, because its not going to play!

Thanks you all for the help! Tried everything with same result. One of those things I guess. Will keep the codecs and VLC so thanks for the great additions. This site and its members rock!!

If it`s a .wmv file it might be drm protected.

Search google for k-lite codecs, grab the complete set including media player classic, real alternative and quicktime alternative... then everything on the net (almost) plays in one player.

I use the KM Player and have yet to have it fail in showing a video or dvd-rip. It has a lot of features, including the ability to 'jog' the audio if it's out of sync with the video.

wmp does indeed suck balls but everytime I have to reinstall my os I have that K-lite pack. It has every code I will ever need.
