I saw this topic somewhere, I could not find it again, so...

While uploading to my R/S account the sppeed pumps up to about 480kb/sec +/-
Then slows to 110kb/sec +/-

I have turned off all firewall settings an etc... I even found out what IP addresses they use and ranges and open ports for those also.
I can not get the speed up..

Any ideas???

My sys: OS X 10.5, firefox browser.
high speed connection cable modem is Linksys
Ethernet speed set on Automatic

I don't know what cable modem speeds are like in the states, here I live in the sticks and only get 2.5Mb/s ADSL, so the best I get from RS is about 380kb/s or so. Check your modem to see what kind of speed you are getting to/from your ISP. (Since you mention ethernet I assume you connect to the modem via a CAT5 (+) network, so try typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar - that should talk directly to the modem.)

What time of day are you trying? I have noticed that in my local morning my d/l speed is much higher - up to 4 times faster than local evening or weekends. This is either due to bandwidth problems at my ISP or RS or both when they are busy. Try downloading at some other time of day - if it gets faster then talk to your ISP about improving your bandwidth.

I nearly forgot - if you are on a network, is anyone else using your bandwidth? If you are the only legitimate user but you have WiFi it is well worth checking no one else is kibutzing on your broadband - I have seen the guy in the apartment above connecting that way.

Good Luck!

i always thought it was the result of the download starting earlier than the timer. i.e. you start a download, but the download menu doesn't start up until a few seconds later - resulting in say 1mb being already downloaded before the menu really starts. 1 second passes and 1.2 mb is downloaded over, so the average is really high. then the average goes lower as it approaches the "real" average
