Hello I recently had a puff of smoke come from my seagate hdd and would like to know weather replacing the pcb will work.

Has anyone from forumophilia done this with success? or is it a waste of time.

Any input would be much apreciated.

Thanks.

The problem is that you will need the PCB from exactly that seagate drive - not a similar one, not a maxstore one that exact one. Good luck, you will need it to find one. Try Seagate.

It may be possible to repair the pcb if you can find someone very skilled in SMT rework, but that will be expensive.

All round, it will be cheaper and a lot quicker to get a new HDD - I hope you are fully backed up!

Another option would be to find an identical drive and just swap the platters over.

You could write to Seagate and see if they provide a service to retrieve your data.

I think you are correct that if you can find the PCB from an identical drive you could retrieve the data.

if you saw the magic smoke escape then I think you're in trouble.

electronics only work when the magic smoke stays inside... that why it's 'magic'....
