Hey guys.

I have a policy on tattoos which is if I initially like a tattoo design, I'll dwell on it for 3 months and see if I still like it as much. If not, I won't bother getting it done.

Lots of design ideas later and I'm still tattoo-less Razz.

There is one design which has passed the 3 month test but it's more like a piece of art rather than your run-of-the-mill tribal designs.

I reckon it'll have a very nice home on my back.

What do you guys think? Waste of money, go for something simpler for my first tattoo or just go for it?

Hmm..its for sure possible to get this done if you find a good tatto artist. The thing is just,it looks like its gonna be a quite big tatto and for the first one..yeah,I'd say take something small & easy for the first,to see & test if you can take getting a tattoo done. Its not really painful, dont wanna scare you,but the first one can be really hard, especially such a big one.Dont know if you like piercings, but if you do,start with one of them.Just to get a feeling for the whole studio atmosphere.A lot of tattoo artists do piercing too or have a piercer in their studio, the feeling of getting a piering is of course not the same as the tattoo.
I did it that way,and I dont regret it. I dont think tattos are a waste of money if you truly want to have one.Oh well, and if you ever get this design done, feel free to post a picture,I bet it looks great on skin.

Thinking about my 3rd tattto design, its not easy finding the perfect one. Laughing Anyway, hope I could help you a bit!

My 2 cents: I have to agree with the sage advice of DA. Why go complex, big and expensive on the first one? I myself have recently decided on what my first will be, but I am absolutely going to go small, simple, and somewhat out of the way (i.e., not emblazoned on my forehead), since I have no idea what I will think of it after the fact. While the expression "if you're going to get wet, you might as well go swimming" if a good life policy in general, in this particular instance dipping one's proverbial toe in the pool first might be the wiser course of action... I like tats, a lot of my friends have them but I have just never found anything I want to live with for the rest of my life. Remember they are still very permanent.

billyellis was right about the "out of the way" bit - some employers will not like visible tats, particularly for better jobs.

If you are in any doubt, don't. Talk to a good tattooist, and he should give you the same advice.

As regards that particular design may I suggest you look at it and think "What am I going to think about that in 20 years time?".

Absolutely. Imagine if 10 years ago you had decided to show your desire for a hot, up-and-coming sexpot by getting a tattoo saying "I Love Britney"? Laughing

Or how about a local troop all getting "Boy Scouts Love Michael Jackson" tattoos together? Laughing

That could work.
I'd like to be there when they went for the teaching job.

put the picture of your desired tattoo up where you are going to see it (frig, above the light switch on your wall, etc) everyday. if after 6 months you still like it go ahead. also no trend tattoos, barbwire, tribal/celtic bands. if you like something make sure you REALLY like it. i know a guy with a pearl jam tattoo, what a dork.
