I downloaded 8 split AVI files from Rapidshare and joined them with hjsplit. The video played on Windows Media and the indicator showed the film was 1 hour 5 minutes long. However, after 32 minutes the video stopped and went back to the begining.I checked the size of the 8 files, added together it came to 707mb but the joined files only came to 396mb.I tried joining again but got the same result.
Anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?thanks

The only thing I can suggest is that you try downloading them again. Sometimes that works.

The problem is, if HJSplit is anthing like VirtualDub, it has a mind of it's own, does what it wants, and retains the process imprinted in it's memory.

Try renaming the 8 files and see what happens when you join them.

thanks Shadowman--unfortunately the files have been deleted from Rapidshare. If they get re-upped will follow your advice.

thanks also to AKAbob----I re-named the files and joined them with hjsplit------this time I only got a video 10 minutes long!! I renamed them back to the originals and again joined with hjsplit and got the 32 minutes again---still missing the most important 33 minutes!!!

Sounds to me like the uploader was not the original poster and was missing one of the pieces, so he/she renamed the extensions. So while it appears that no files are missing, there probably is a missing segment right where the file craps out.

The other thing to try is to play it on VLC. WMP is horrible at playing files that have any flaws, whereas VLC is quite good at ignoring errors and continuing to play. I wonder if VLC would play the higher number files if you removed the .00X from the extension?

I once drug a .gif image file across an open VLC Player screen.

The VLC Player played the .gif as if it were a movie Surprised

Many .gif files are actually like "flip books," where they have multiple images stored at low quality and will play them in sequence (order and speed as set by the file creator) when opened in the right software. Most browsers will play them correctly if you right-click/open with. Animated GIFs were basically the precursor to flash animation back in the days of dial-up. Anytime you have a gif that is >50kb but small dimension-wise, it is probably storing more than just the top image.

No sarcasm. I didn't intend to "play" it. I Had the .gif on my desktop, was dragging it to another spot on my desktop, crossed over an open VLC player, and the damn thing played. it. It did shock me to see that happen. I didn'y open the file with VLC. I merely crossed the open VLC player.

I make animated .gif files from movie clips.

I make and edit other .gif files, too.

My bad. Embarassed I read your post as if you were surprised that a gif could be animated. Actually, your experience is a little disturbing to me. Anytime a process can begin without direction from the user, that gets my attention. Mad

I must have dropped the .gif in the VLC Player when I was crossing over it.

I just tried the same thing with Media Player Classic. Both players will play a video or a .gif if you drag and drop them.
