Good or bad for us free users ?

By eliminating the captchas we simplified the use of RapidShare's free services significantly. In addition, free-users can now upload and download bigger files (up to 200 megabyte). Anyhow, to protect RapidShare from congestion caused by automated downloading, we limited the maximum download speed for free‐users to 500 kilobit per second. To compensate for that, they do not have to wait anymore until starting a succeeding download.

It's almost as if Rapidshare is reading my posts in this thread.

https://www.forumophilia.com/topic58325.html

Uploading 200Mb kicks the hell out of 100MB. I am curious to see how long it will take for the 100MB partitioners to figure that out. 200MB file partitioning for larger files will cut the point potential in half.

I think it is a great move. I tried a few free downloads.

The timer was 25 seconds for all, no codes, no pop-ups. No waiting in between downloads.

The first hit between 20-40 kb/sec. The second hummed along closer to 60 the whole time. the third hit well over 60KB/second.

I downloaded the third file again as a premium and got between 200 and 400KB/second. That matches the Megaupload download rate.

The only flaw I see is the new page layout. I have to drag down to get to the choice of download options.

if i were to guess i would say this is bad news for free users in the long run. at first, everyone will be happy with no captchas and no wait times. but imagine dling a 200mb file at 500 kilobits per second (if my math is right that will take approximately 55 minutes at top speed).

of all the free services i have tried, my personal favorite was always megaupload/megaerotic. not sure why others don't like it (300mb files and no noticeable bandwidth throttling for free users).

for me this news doesnt mean too much as i have rs premium, i will go where the uploaders go

Having only ever used the free service, I'm hoping it'll be a good thing. I won't miss the captchas, either!

Edit: It's almost as slow as my old dial-up connection. Sad
Maybe I will have to spring for Premium.

Damn, I voted for "good" but I have a lot of second thoughts about it already.

1) The limitation of the download speed is surely against all free users. It doesn't mean so much to me (having only a 768 kbit connection), but I would get really mad if I had a > 2Mbit connection. Even so it means I need generally 25 % more time to download a file. That's ok for 10-15 MB files, but unbearable for any larger file! Evil or Very Mad
This is just to force people with fast connections into a premium account, and its disapproved by me Exclamation

2) The new rules for rapidpoints are against the free users, too. The file has to be bigger (3 MB) and you can generate only 3 points per hour.
With the old system I needed to log off my internet provider after each download (just to get a new IP-address) and so I could generate up to 20 rapidpoints per hour (calculating with 10 MB files), especially when there was "happy hour". As there is no need to log off now, people will surely loose a lot of points. Evil or Very Mad
Edit: I just saw that premium users are also able to generate rapidpoints, so that might offset the negative things I said in 2).

3) Looks like "happy hour" is gone for good. That's bad, too. Evil or Very Mad

That's all so far, guys

Hope you all enjoy your stay at forumphilia Very Happy

PS: By the way, I don't really care for myself about the rapidpoints, it just came into my mind.

the new system is faster for free users if the file is more than 100mb

example with a 250 mb vid

old system :
dl 50 ------- wait 50 min after the dl
dl 100 -------- wait 100 min after the dl
dl 100

waiting : 150 minutes

new system
dl 100 ------- wait approximatly 20 min during the dl (100ko/s limit with my adsl connection))
dl 100 --------wait approximatly 20 min during the dl
dl 50 --------- wait approximatly 10 min

waiting : 50 minutes

Regarding the download speed limit for free users ...

Have to look at the forest and not the trees. Razz

I have a ~5 Mb connection, so watching my download speed go from ~450 Kbit/sec down to at most 63 Kbit/sec was excruciating. Shocked Oh ... the horror ... the horror ... Crying or Very sad For a 100 Mb file, a 4 minute download now stretches out for a painful 27 minutes (ish). In this "can't wait for it" world, 27 minutes is a bloody eternity.

HOWEVER, with no wait in between - which varied from 60 to 100 minutes - I can actually get more free pRon in less time. Cool

And that, my friends, is a good thing. Very Happy Very Happy

Who it really sucks for: free users with a non-static IP (or who use software to change the IP and/or fool RS), and a high-speed connection. Exclamation And that's a lot more people than you might think.

that's who i was talking about. i don't know many free users, but my guess is that if they are relatively net savy they aren't waiting for the 55 minute inbetween wait time Very Happy

right!
we download (800 kb/sec) a file in 2 min. Then restart the connection and in 10" we were ready for a new dwnl. This really piss me off Twisted Evil
