How can you, or is it even possible, render video stills, pictures, from video files?

So, for example, if I wanted to render a picture from an MPEG, AVI or Windows Media(TM) file, how would or could I, if possible, go about doing so?

Esteban:

I am having a lot of trouble trying to use imagegrabberII. To begin with, I am unable to play the specific video I wanted to grab images from in the first place. Then, regarding videos I can play, when I hit the button to take stills, and it gives me an option of thirty or whatever, when I hit okay the software freezes up and I am **** to end the program. What am I doing wrong?

Hi dj-spin

Since the upload of ImageGraber was done by me and is the very same as I'm using myself it must be something that is different in the environment.

I'm having XP Home as the base SW.
If you are on VISTA I have no info if it works or not.
The problem could be with your codec-pack that is installed.
In this thread https://www.forumophilia.com/topic11375.html you will find links including packages that works with VISTA.

The freeze phenomena I have only experienced with the High Definition vids and then it wasn't a real freeze.
It was just a very slow process to get the caps.
Could take 30 minutes to get my usual 36 frames.

Hope this gets you a step closer the end. Very Happy

IO have noticed a few problems when trying to get stills from .wmv files, sometimes it works some times it freezes, sometimes it take 30 images of the same frame. Strange, but all in all its the best one ive used.

When you get 30 frames identical SD from a vid then you need to reindex it.
The same file if you play it, you couldn't jump in it.
It has to be played from the beginning to the end.
Use ASF-tools and ask it to join the files, although you just have one file in the list.
Works like a charm.

if you just want a single movie frame still captured, it'd be a lot easier if you just used a player allowing copying frames to the clipboard.

i am personally very fond of the free km player. dozens of built-in codecs, it hasn't failed me with any type of movie codec yet.

it also allows copy/pasting. just press ctrl-c and the wanted frame is copied to the clipboard for further use. i always use it to make my preview images.

I used to use VLCmedia player but now I've started using Imagevenue as image host and it won't accept vlc snaps so now I tend to capture shots the good old fashioned way by playing the vid on any media player that gives a good image, pausing when I want a snap then taking a screen shot and cropping it appropriately. Takes a fraction longer but it works.
