hat more and more posters are using passwords of late. Just wondering. What is the point? What do they really accomplish? Question

I always wondered the same thing. I mean...PW protected files have the password typed into the tread! It would be funny to post everything, then let people try and guess it on their own for a few days Laughing Laughing Laughing

Funnier still when find that all your posts have been deleted.Laughing Laughing Laughing

Among other things p/w's help to protect against link-thieves. The p/w might be recognizable eg 'posted-by-kuifje' or 'mac1' and it can be modified by the uploader at any time. Fewer link-thieves means longer longevity.

Its as Sugarman says....if you know how to use Google (our best friend) correctly you can set it up to do all sorts of lovely searches using different strings...passwords to hosted files is one of them. Makes it a lot easier to generate hits on files posted by the same person. Its also a good idea, as mentioned elsewhere in the forum, to make sure that you post links to your files in plain code rather than as a hotlink. Search engines and auto bots find it much harder to pick out plain text as oppossed to hotlinks in cached pages. Personally I try to have a different password to every file that i upload if i can.

Because the most popular here rapidshare and some other file hosters don't actually allow porn to be uploaded to their servers... check their TOS!

Because of this, password protecting helps to keep files alive for longer.

Sites like Abby Winters, local webmasters, and IFM do regular scans using web crawling search engines like Google and AltaVista daily. Not only does adding a pass increase the chances of the files survival but it’s a good idea to rename the file something totally off topic as well, and if the upload site requires a description make it very brief..

I know guys like Felix(Kari sweets phot) and MPL studios webmaster. If the file is renamed and pass worded there’s little chance they can find it unless they come here and look directly at it Wink
