Hi,

What free software do you guys use to make those great thumbnail images, you know the images with 3 or 4 columns and 6 or so rows of mini screen caps of the vid.

I've been using Media Player Classic (version 6.4.9.0) and though it works most of the time, quite regulary it completely fails with a vid with the following error (restarting the program and trying again never helps, and yes I have made sure the renderers selected in the options are compatible with capturing): "GetCurrentImage failed, hr = 8004022e"

What alternative free software is available? Not free?

Thanks, regards, etc..

Since Abraxas has removed his post I may as well remove my response. Thanks anyway Abraxas, sorry if you got the wrong end of the stick, and thanks again for giving such detailed help (even if it was unnecessary, it was still kind of you to make a big effort).

If you mean screens like these, I use Image Grabber.

Thanks. But are you sure you can make images like these (below) with IrfanView? I'm not just after a normal screen capture. If so how?

Don't bother replying about IrfanView, or any other suggestions, I've tried Image Grabber, as suggested by Ozzy, and it works very well even on the files that Media Player Classic fails with. All in all, an excellent addition to my video software collection. Many thanks Ozzy, it is just what I needed, and I recommend all video posters download it.

A usage hint. If you change the font for the file info. in the 'Options' to 'Courier' or 'Courier New', which are both 'fixed width fonts', you can then use spaces to make the 'file name', 'file size', 'dimensions', and 'length' details all allign themselves neatly.

Here's the download details, many thanks again Ozzy.

The most popular are:

1) WinRAR which creates a RAR archive. When creating the RAR you can specify 'Split to volumes' and enter a max size for each volume/part, for Rapidshare this would be 100MB (or just under to be on the safe side), this results in files like video.part1.rar, video.part2.rar, etc.
Url for trial (below) which has nags, but you'll find a cracked version in no time on the web or with torrent software.

2) HJSplit which simply splits the file into multiple parts with a .001, .002, etc., extension. Again you can specify the max size which for RS would obviously be 100MB again. It's free:

To be thorough: 3) WinZip - same as WinRAR, but far inferior. Redundant really, WinRAR is the killler app. cos it handles .zip files too.

Neither adds MBs to the file size, WinRAR may reduce the overall size by a few MBs for big vids (but only if whoever encoded them did so badly).

Personally I prefer HJSplit, cos it's faster to use. Note WinRAR will TRY and compress the file, taking much more time, unless you choose 'Store' as the 'Compression level' which means 'just store the files, don't even try to compress them'.

If you use this forum reulary you'll need both WinRAR and HJSplit to rejoin the files others have split.

HTH.

BTW who is your avatar girl?

Oh yes, never noticed that, thanks.

It can't do thumb caps automatically from a video file, and you need to add the images manually, and there's no grid facility just either vertical or horizontal allignment. Still could be useful, many thanks.
