Recently I lost my beloved 500GB hard drive that was nearly full of all my favorite films, music and erotica. The drive developed the dreaded "click of death". There was no hope once this disease set in. In the time it took me to reboot the drive was dead.

What a tragedy...

With the help of everyone here in this forum I am happy to say that Drive #2 is filling up nicely. While Drive #1 will be missed I am finding a place in my heart for the new hard drive.

Yep, of course he meant 500 Gb. And stop calling me Shirley.

Victor1, that sucks. It sounds like you've gone through all the stages of grief already ... shock and denial ... anger ... finally, acceptance. I wish you nothing but the best as you move on with life. Actually, I bet its a little bit fun in some way to go back and collect some goodies, yes? Anyone with THAT much pRon saved up has to enjoy the process if you know what I mean. Wink

What is this "click of death" illness to which you refer? Seriously? I'm clueless. I only have a small 40 GB external HD for my most treasured things, but I think if I ever lost it I'd hang myself with my own intestines faster than you can say "noose o' entrails".

Thanks, and good luck.

RM

p.s. oh Esty, you're so gullible. Very Happy

RM I know exactly what vic means with the "click of death".
Thats when you are accesing the drive and it response with a metallic sound, a click.
Screen goes blue telling you "I can't write to C:\" Press any key to continue.
Got that on my old computer and as soon as it happened I started to save everything i wanted to keep onto cd.
Like vic says an illness that is terminal.
Not killing the drive immediatly but surley.

Then I just said goodbuy to my 6 year old friend.
Next day I went out and got a replacement but for old times sake I kept the keyboard, the cordless mouse (no tampon) and the flatscreen.

Yep, I meant GB That's what I get for trying to be funny.

The thing is the drive was only 5 months old. I still need to RMA it. I'll get around to that when I can.

Sorry Estaban, I wrote it all to try to get a laugh. Guess I suckered you in. Very Happy

Oh I did get a laugh! Laughing

O.k. so you did mean 500 GB well that's gonna be just as bad as a death in the family... especially if you have grown attached to your external hd, given it a pet name, bring to bed for safe keeping and kiss it goodnight etc... does anyone else do this here??? Nah me neither Laughing

BTW RM you only have a 40 gig drive Shocked You should be ashamed of yourself Laughing

Guess I didn't mention my big ol' honkin' stack of 4.7Gb DVDs. Very Happy Very Happy But seriously, I go for quality, not quantity.

Thanks Svinto for 'splainin' this "click of death" thing. I think I understand, but I'm also guessing that by the time you hear this clicking thing, its too late. Nothing left to do but go through the pockets looking for loose change. I pray that doesn't happen to me, insh'Allah. I put lots of stuff on DVD, but I only put the best of the best onto my lil' external drive (and on DVD from now on, too).

Also, Esty, I like to carry my 40 Gb HD around in my pocket when I go out. Makes a nice bulge. Embarassed Which inevitably leads to the question: "is that an external hard drive in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

Same thing happened to me last week. But the next day realized it was a blessing in disguise because it woke me up to the fact that I didn't need most of the stuff I'd collected - it cut off with one chop this hunk of fat like so many of these little disasters in life.

i had this a few times with 250gb .. warez / movies / porn it was basicly my download hdd.. since a few tragedy's i now backup on dvd more often and important stuff i even copy to another hdd to be safe when im too lazy to make dvds yet..

nowadays hdd's are cheap .. just get an external casing FW/USB etc. and use it to backup stuff to..
