Yes, it's a known problem. It's an error of the Windows system, especially with the AVI files. I know it exists a little sofware to resolve this problem which can go over the Windows files system indexation, but I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of this software. I'm sure you can find it in a software site under the theme "utilities" or "tools".
When I have this problem, I use another method, possible because I have two systems in the same computer. I boot with the other system, so I can access to the file (stored in the inactive system) to delete it. That works fine.
You can use the same method if you can place your hard drive (which countains the file) as an external drive, and access to it through another computer.
Are you using a limited account or an administrator account? Occasionally, you might see that error message when trying to delete things using a limited account.
I had this problem long time ago,when I had Windows Millennium installed.
I think what a I did is I created a new folder and put this video file in it and
then deleted.If does not work at the first try,then restart the computer and
try to delete it again.Hope this works for you.
I know there is a problem with the microsoft picture manager program. If you delete the actual pics and folder they were in it leaves a history of the file names in the program that cannot be deleted. I keep getting a similar message to what you just mentioned. If that is the problem then just choose the option to add to your picture shortcuts and it should then disappear (as it adds nothing but removes it from the recently viewed list).
If that is not the problem you have and you are referring to an actual file that can't be deleted from your hardrive then maybe if you boot your computer into safe mode? And try again? Maybe there is another program running that is hindering you from deleting and doing this will only allow the very basic programs to be loaded at start-up. It's worth a try.
Have you tried the command prompt and delete them from there? Start>Run type cmd. A window opens and you need ot path to the location you want and then type del *.jpg to delete all of the jpgs...
I have had a similiar problem in the past, I have deleted all the files from a folder and then was unable to delete the folder the two things I have found are;
1) make sure everything is deleted, this can happen if you have hidden items in the folder. Make sure you click options then click show hidden files and folders in your window.
2) try moving the folder to a new location, turn the system off, then when you turn it on it should have lost its link with whatever program was using it.
Hmm. I have had the same problem in the past with XP. Even if you create a separate administrator account you won’t be able to delete the old account because of the mystery file (possible virus). This happens often in vista as well when a file doesn’t complete downloading or exporting.
I know your not running vista, but for anyone who is (and wondering what to do) Go to start menu - control panel - folder options - view tab - and select “always show icons, never thumbnails”. Restart your machine and poof, you can delete the file. Of course you will want to reverse that once it’s all said and done.
Maybe there is something similar that can be done with XP?
I have contacted microshaft on the vista issue so maybe there will be a patch soon…
Thanks hidden, looks promising, am dl'ng now to see about cleaning up some of my stubborn files!
