7 years in prison for internet piracy - crazy or what?

Stumbled upon an article today. Guy got 7+ years sentence for violating copyrights and there is an interesting point raised is it too much? Rapists, murderes, molesters get similar time for their crimes and here we basically got a nerd copying some software thrown in prison with those guys for the same kind of time. Seems pretty excessive to me. On the side note, 7 years for molesters and murderers seems way too mild.

Well I think prison times are way to long in the USA anyway, or generally the way the handle the prisoners. In Germany you get like max 15 years and in these days they try to help the person to become better.

Prisons should be there to help people be part of the society again, what is the point of locking people away? This only makes them more aggressive.
