I've noticed it a lot in playboy/pentouse style photos where the models are all plastic and completely plastered in makeup. Even their pussy has that foundation makeup or something they use on their face to brown it. It's usually pretty obvious. I don't get it myself.

As far as I know, the most efficient technique used in magazines (especially Playboy) for that "plastic look" is Photoshop...
There are several retouching filters that can be applied to erase grains, scars, etc from the model's skin. You barely can recognize the original model from the final printed pics.
