Hi, I think my External HD might be dead, but I was wondering if the forumophilia community had any suggestions in how to recover my massive organised selection of favourite videos...

I know I can remove the enclosure and connect directly but I was wondering if anyone could recommend data recovery software, or other tricks...

Much obliged!!

Hmm, what actually died? The power supply?

If you open them up they usually have a SATA connection linked to a USB convertor so you can hook it up to a SATA port with a normal cable in most cases.

As for data recovery, you can see if everything is accessable if you hook it up.
If it isn't you can try something like making a usb boot drive with Hiren's Boot CD on it (this is what's in it:
Code:
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
annnd here is the download link
Code:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download
/ and a little youtube vid to get you started Razz

)

Other then that all i can think of is manual forensics but that requires alot of skill.

Good luck Very Happy

You should first try to connect the HD internally, or with another enclosure.
Because it could be your enclosure which is dead.

A friend of mine tried to put his HD in the fridge for 24H and was actually able to make it work again for a backup.

Yeah, try the HD internally before proceeding.

I've had pretty good success with hooking the drive up outside of the enclosure and using http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Best of all it's free.
