It seems a driver problem!
Goes to AMD site and tries update the driver of your videocard.

So seems that are missing some codec to play these videos.
But we could make two tests to see if the problem is on the video or if it's of your computer.
Do you have the link from where you got this video.
I could donwload and try play it here.

And you also can change the video to other format using this free software
Format Factory
Download it here - http://www.pcfreetime.com/
Some avi videos sometimes has codec error when they are in HD.

I have the same problem Jack, and I get the same feedback that I need to stick with VLC player but I find that to the be worst player of all.

I guess the only solution is figuring out how to install the right CODEC for files larger than 1GB. I try to play MP4, MKV, and MOV movies over 1GB and ALL OF THEM exhibit the same stutter or stall performance and the sound is out of sync.

If the file is under 1GB and in MP4/MKV/MOV format then the problem doesn't exist.

As for AVI and WMV files over 1GB I have no problem, but I think that's because the quality is not as high or compressed?

check your graphics card if it's powerful enough to handle HD vids. I had to update mine to this http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-9400-gt/specifications so I can hook up 2 monitors and play anything I want. I'm also into technical graphics programs like raster design using hi res aerial photographs.
