LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL and two other US internet companies late on Monday said they were joining forces to fight the distribution of **** pornography on the web.

The companies - which have cooperated in the past to battle viruses, spam and identity theft - said they will work with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited ****ren (NCMEC) on the new effort.

"We believe it is possible to increase the chance that **** predators will be caught and provide a deterrent to those who would be tempted to exploit ****ren on the internet," said John Ryan, chief counsel at Time Warner's AOL.

(Sadly these companies suck at competing against spam, viruses and identity theeft. AOL is the easiest network to hack, in fact many "junior" hackers learn to hack by attacking AOL. MSN is based on MS Software and we all know how crappy that stuff is.)

Web giants join **** porn fight

JUNE 28, 2006
MICROSOFT, Yahoo, AOL and other US internet companies are joining forces to fight the distribution of **** pornography on the web.

The companies - which have cooperated in the past to battle viruses, spam and identity theft - said they will work with the US' National Centre for Missing and Exploited ****ren (NCMEC) on the new effort.

"We believe it is possible to increase the chance that **** predators will be caught and provide a deterrent to those who would be tempted to exploit ****ren on the internet," AOL chief counsel John Ryan said.

Other participants in the effort, known as the Technology Coalition at NCMEC, include EarthLink and United Online. Members of the group are scheduled to testify before the US Congress this week and have pledged $US1 million ($1.37 million) in combined initial funding.

Mr Ryan said the coalition's first order of business was to attack the distribution of illicit images of ****ren on the web by creating a database of signatures - or codes that identify known pornographic images - so that internet service providers can spot them and stop them from being shared.

(The above is a very simple procedure, and can be used by the private sector for "monitoring" exchange activity of their own images, yet the physical implementation is tedious at best. However - individual ISP providers can "verify" file exchanges with ease because all they have to do is route traffic thru "screens" within their own networks. This way they can identify customer requests whom "match" signatures in the database. )

The group would also research and develop tools for law enforcement and study study the technology that predators use to exploit ****ren and to conceal their activity.

(Oh no - they will ask Preverted Justice how to entice conversations of potential predators?)

NCMEC's CyberTipline collects reports of **** sexual exploitation. NCMEC has assisted law enforcement with more than 119,800 missing **** cases, resulting in the recovery of more than 102,200 ****ren.

Although it's positive that these entities focus on "nasty" stuff and "predators", but will they be able to seperate and distinguish this material from NN? Or will they just presume that any image depicting a person under the age of 18, be suspect as qualifying as CP?

Of course the "by-product" of this is that it seems the tech sector and a growing number of ISP service providers will start paying more attention to electronic exchanges of users. In other words - more spying on customers.

Start becoming aware of what signatures your chosen activity creates and whom might be monitoring this activity. If the technology proves successful, its possible but difficult to start creating a "blacklist" of domains and start blocking site requests of users. The good news - perhaps the ACLU and freedom of speech fighters will get involved in this cencorship as they have before in Pennsylvania when the state tried banning access to any web sites involving a "black list". I wonder what person is in charge of determining the criteria for this "black list"?

Since a glance at the calander yielded that July 1st is right around the corner - do not be surprised regarding a huge increase in LEA activity. A majority of the US states start a new fiscal year this week. This means that law enforcement budgets are replenished as a result from last year's activity, and they be ready for action as well.
