Is it because i went exploring the opposite direction to the storyline and its nastier on that side of the world or is it just that bit harder on adept and i should knock down the difficulty?
That's what I did. But some dungeons are simply too tough to handle early on. Even at level 41 I run into some wizards who nuke me once and kill me. Other places I just destroy them like they were nothing. If you get to one of the main cities where there is a Jarl, you can do the quests an get a NPC to go with you. Or you can hire one from a tavern. Or buy a war dog. Sometimes the NPC will seem indestructible and other times they can die quick. But you just can't hack and slash your way through all of it. Main tactic to use is try to stay up high when fighting stuff and attack from a distance if possible. Fighting a giant at close range will only get you killed quickly. Also helps if you are in sneak mode when you attack to get get double damage. Attack and then sneak off before they find you.
Things will really improve once you start to get your shouts. Mark of Death will help you kill things a lot faster, including dragons.
Also, the higher the level you get, the better the merchandise is in stores. All skills can be greatly increased with treasure found or bought. And even if you are playing a melee type character, you still want a heal spell and a pet spell like the fire atronach or whatever it's called.
One nice thing they do is they let you know if a dungeon has been cleared on the map. Helps you keep track of what you have and haven't done.
And you want a horse as soon as possible. A horse will let you go places you can't go otherwise. Kinda like having 4 wheel drive. A horse will also attack things and can die if you're not careful.
The game does have a few bugs so if you get stuck, just ask.
