wondering if there is a program to convert a windows media [tm] video file to mpeg...

Xilisoft makes some great products, great for batch work. I believe ImToo is a free download. It is the same platform as Xilisoft, I have been told. If you start using either and have any questions PM me and I can help walk you through any bumps in the road.
