Limewire and WinMX are peer-to-peer file sharing programs. Anyone running this software shares a directory on their drive and allows its contents to be searched and downloaded by others using the same software.

Used primarily for sharing MP3 music files, both programs also support sharing pictures, videos and other binaries. Since many of the users are inexperienced idiot AOLers, the directories are also full of viruses and spyware. Case in point: Certain searches turn up many files with different names - all exactly the same size.

P2P software is useful, but must be used with care. For more information on these programs, go to <servicename>.com and read all about it.
