Verification codes

A number of sites use verification codes for registration, file dowloading, etc. But have you noticed that sometimes the codes are unreadable? I understand they want to avoid spamming or bots, but it seems counterproductive making the code unreadable. It's frustrating trying a dozen times trying to "guess" what the code is because it's impossible to read.

It can be a pain, but unfortunately they need to be hard to read or the automated tools they are there to block can also work out the code by analysing the image

Too true. They seem to be getting harder and harder to read. Took 10 goes or so on one the other day to succeed.

I understand they don't want to make it easy for bots to fill in the boxes, but when it is literally impossible to tell what is the code, then what's the point? I've given up on registration for forums when I couldn't get the code right after a dozen tries. Yes, make it difficult for bots, but don't make it impossible for humans to read. It becomes counterproductive when legitimate applicants quit because they can't "guess" what the code is.

I seriously hate that verification codes, but I did realize, sometimes they allowed you to get one or 2 letter wrong and it will still work!

If you change the screen resolution of your monitor to a lower number, the captcha image is larger and easier to read. It will improve your chances of guessing correctly, especially when the captcha includes punctuation marks or text in tiny print running vertically or letters which are too close to one another.

If you are using a Microsoft Windows operating system, you can usually change the screen resolution by going to the desktop, right clicking, selecting Properties, then clicking the Settings tab.

At Oron,right Site of the Captcha there is a little Icon,called >reload <.If a Code is unreadble you can get another one.

I get the point of verification codes, but they do need to ensure that human beings can read it. There are some codes that are impossible to read.

Most captchas have an audio system too, as a backup. Other systems use a question such as adding two numbers or asking a question which a 'bot' can easily be trained to read. One which is effective though is where you have to choose a selection of items in a list or pick small photos which show apples for instance.

Websites dont do these captchas for fun. It is tedious and costs them to add to a website ...'bots' can be trained to read these things and they need to keep one step ahead.....
