This came up at Liudnux's great "Beautiful Naked" thread in Pic Post,
because he ups his sets using 7Z software.

**********

A Q came up, in previous posts and some recent PM's, about using
winRAR to open 7Z files. WinRAR is fully capable of opening any and all
7Z sets. But, you have to tell it to do so. Here is how:

Choose the "Options" pull-down menu, then choose "Settings", then
choose the "Integration" tab.

Then, make sure the 7Z box is checked, and save that setting.

It works great. Actually, winRAR works so damn good that I have
checked and activated every single type of file in its "Integration" list. I
highly recommend that, to anyone.

BTW - if anyone else has any good tricks that make WinRAR more useful,
please share. Even if you think, "Heck, most people already know that",
the fact is, SOME people don't, and they (usually) really do appreciate
some nice, friendly, useful help!!

Here's another nice trick a lot of people might not have noticed --

If you have DL'd 2 or more sets, to some particular folder or directory
(BTW, I always use "0" [zero] as the folder name for any and all raw
DL's, and "1" as the folder name for all "opened sets"; that system works
great, and I never forget what goes where), then, in a Windows system (I
presume Mac's have something similar), you can use winRAR to do an
automated open of any and all such rar or zip files.

How? It's not hard.

Use your mouse to highlight all of the rar or zip filenames you want to
open. If you're not already familiar with the "Hold down Control key when
you click, for each new file" and "Hold down Shift key when you click, for
a whole group of files", try those tricks, and see how they work -- they're
a standard part of Windows.

Then, when all the pre-opened files are highlighted, RIGHT-click on any of
them. A list of options will open up. Choose the one that says, "Extract
each archive to separate folder". It will do so, and it will give each new
folder the same name as the archive.

If you follow fucht's directions to Settings you will find that you can add other filetypes that winrar should accosiate as rarfiles.
Below the listing of filetypes is a commandline where you can enter additional types.
I have added cbr and cbz for automatic detection as files to open with winrar.

Thanks for the 7z hint, but i guess i have to update first: my version 3.0 does not have this feature.

It's not a trick, more a suggestion, since it can be very annoying:

- Do not use any compression when packing videos.

Now and then you find archives that take very, very long to extract. Mostly because different compression levels are used. Videos are already compressed by their video codecs so you hardly see any difference in the filesize, but it takes a lot of time not only to extract but also to pack the files.
Same with most of the pics. Only for high quality jpgs (100%) a moderate compression might be helpful.
This option can be modified via settings/compression standards: just choose "store" instead of any compression.

Another thing is "authenticity information":

- Do not add "authenticity information" to your files

This option, as far as i understand it, is only useful when you pack files for storing purposes on your pc, not for distribution. It adds a kind of digital signature to the files and is only valid if you open it on the pc where it has been created.
If another one opens the files on his pc, he gets an error message, very annoying with multiparted rars.
