hi to all i read this today:

"Berlin - Rapidshare, the Germany-based file-hosting service that has come under fire for hosting unauthorized copyrighted content, has in recent weeks begun to target users uploading or downloading copyrighted files by terminating their accounts and logging IP address data, TorrentFreak reported."

so if this is true an the ip is hold in some database, and if you see most of the post have rapidshare links is safe or is illigal now download the sets and the clips from that site??? give me your advice or your opinion

sorry i speak in spanish and maybe some of you too so here is the news in spanish

First: RS is closing accounts of uploaders with too many reported files ever since. The do it to avoid trouble themselves.

2nd: phisher send mails to owners of stolen accounts in order to prevent trying to get the account back. Thats usually a message like: "Account closed, because you have downloaded too much porn."

Now this genious at TorrentFreak didn't recognize the scam-mail and doesn't understand the difference between uploading files to Rapidshare and downloading from RS.

It was a little too early for a April-fool joke Very Happy

Meanwhile this news is updated already several times. Mostly mixing up some completely different things and trying to get out of of the story by confusing everyone.

Update: There is no doubt that the email we posted here earlier was fake. The bit about Rapidshare storing privacy sensitive information in its users for “legal reasons” is not true.

why the hell is the board censoring "latest message" Question

You should also note that it says the German based Rapidshare, ie rapidshare.de not the Schwitzerland based rapidshare.com.

... but only in the translated spanish news-article, not in the TorrentFreak-news referred there.

RS.com was (re-) founded as a different/"not RS.de" company in Suisse to avoid more problems in Germany, but it's still german-based Razz

btw. especially uploading movies produced in germany will most likely kill an account at RS.com these days Mad And the reports of closed accounts increase.

seems like RS wants to become "more legal" lately ->
Code:
http://tainment.rapidshare.com/vision

Back to locomars question: RS doesn't log downloads, especially not, who downloaded what.
Code:
dead link

RS logs the used traffic per IP, of course (for a while).

I'm sure that you are on the safe side if you download porn. RS mostly got charged when it comes to music or mainstream movies, lately even e-books. And one argument was that RS is encouraging the upload of illegal stuff by their rewards system. So that may be one reason they suspended it.

And i think that even uploading porn is not a real problem, just because so many people are doing this. The only problem i can think of is, if you only upload site-rips again and again (after the files have been reported). If it's not an agency that is reporting the files but maybe an angry siteowner, i could imagine that he will try to force RS to close your account and if they got a mail from him the second time, RS is just terminating your account because it's gets too time consuming (but that's just guessing).

And it might be a problem if you are earning too much points. We all know that nobody "earns" 500k points or more with only offering his holiday pictures. Beside the fact that there are surely a lot of phishers still active who act in RS's name, some accounts may really have been closed by RS because they are simply suspicious and of course no one can legally argue against it.

But normal porn posters are the backbone of RS business and i'm sure they know that. So if your postcount here does not exceed 10k posts and your RS points not exceed 1 million your are rather safe Wink

...and here's Rapidshare's response.

False reports confuse RapidShare customers
March 29, 2010

During the last couple of days some e-mails created confusion, imputing illegal activities to the recipients and stating that RapidShare was collecting data against the Privacy Policy for legal purposes. The e-mails also advised the users to seek legal council. These emails are faked and did not originate from us. If you have received such a message, please contact our support, because your Premium Account might have been "phished". The fake e-mails are sent to keep you from contacting us.

In fact, nothing has changed at RapidShare over the last days. We are still not collecting any information about which user downloads which files. We are still successfully fighting in court against requests to open or scan our customers' files, be it by our staff or by use of content recognition technologies. We are still defending data privacy rights on the internet.

Of course, you still have to comply with our terms and conditions. If content owners bring to our attention that some of our customers have obviously distributed pirated copies of their content repeatedly or at a large scale, we reserve the right to close these accounts without previous notice.
